1. During my yesterday jog in Upperhill, which is our financial district, I came across two spots where sewer is being released into storm water drainage, which will ultimately reach Nairobi Rivers.

2. There is simply no way we are going to deal with cleaning Nairobi Rivers before we deal with Nairobi sewer system and garbage, both end up in the rivers.

3. If this is happening in the financial district, imagine informal settlement?

Some people have been asking what happens to people when they join the government. I have also been asking myself the same. You find someone who does and says all the right things. But the moment they join the government you can't recognise them anymore. They start spewing unfathomable absurdities at an alarming rate.

One of the obvious reasons is that there are people who criticise the government merely because they are outside. A government is only bad to them because they are not part of it. Others criticise the government so that they can be coopted into it to deflate their sting. Many people are simply fake. Their views are dictated by their circumstances as opposed to principles.

The other issue is the high levels of inequality in the country. Joining the government means earning big money. It is like winning a lottery. The newly minted millionaires can't interact with normal folks anymore. The gap between them and the mwananchi becomes too wide to cross.

Someone who was living in Kinoo is suddenly living in Karen. It has become like a rule that senior people in government must live in Karen. This change of lifestyle largely explains what goes wrong. How do people sustain such lifestyles acquired overnight? It is only by looting the government.

That is why such people appear like they are imprisoned in those government positions. They can't resign as that would mean going back to the lowly life now firmly behind them.

The change of lifestyle also means losing connection with reality. They lose touch with what is going on in ordinary people's lives. When these people talk arrogantly and out of touch, they most likely believe what they are saying.

They think how they live in Karen is how all Kenyans live. That is why a leader can live in opulence and arrogantly claim they have no idea what opulence is. You are wearing a belt costing KSh 50,000 while claiming you don't know opulence. Do you know millions of Kenyans have never held KSh 50,000 in their lives at once?

For as long as leaders can't live amongst the people and experience normal life, we shouldn't expect much change. A corrupt government will use money to corrupt those who join it to avoid any resistance from within. Once you are compromised you are silenced forever and ever. If you think you have seen weird things, you ain't seen nothing yet.
