This is why I could never win the Nobel Prize:
-my dad was the garbage man and a used car salesman when I was a kid and has a junior-high level education
It never ceases to amaze me how much the elite education/scientific system excludes poor and working class kids.
Confused about how to select control variables in regression analysis? Read "Statistical Control Requires Causal Justification" by @AnnaWysocki3, Katherine M. Lawson and @mijkenijk

Having a well-cited mentor, they find, sets a junior researcher up for success, whereas lacking one can lead to a career spent on its periphery
This is based on an analysis of 245,500 mentor-mentee pairs worldwide who published ~10 million papers. https://t.co/qph8lmJaPI

Impressed with this paper from @vasabjit_b Willson & @scottlgreer. Argues that we should apply comparative theories of civil-military relations (especially in fragile democracies) to the case of police departments in the US. Insightful!

Unfortunately, academic inflation and toxic productivity culture has all but done away with this. The effects of this on science advancement will be seen for generations. Slowing down and thinking deeply is essential to solve complex problems and it’s undervalued at every level.
I really like this. I’m decent at Python but R is still the language I feel most comfortable with, so this made some concepts a little more crystallized for me via analogy to R. I think it’s a great resource for people who started with R

Don’t ever talk to me about how Black people aren’t owed reparations because no one alive has suffered what the reparations are for. These survivors for more than a century have stubbornly refused to die, only to be denied justice again and again. That is despite the fact that the state of Oklahoma’s own task force recommended reparations. When it comes to descendants of slavery, this country has always engaged in the tactic of delay until death. That is why reparations MUST include descendants. What is the statute of limitations on crimes against humanity?
No surprise! It’s because US institutions have continually proven themselves untrustworthy to Black people!
Case in point: current race-correction factor for lung function has resulted in Black veterans losing out on more $1 billion in disability payments.
IMPORTANT update to @pewresearch report: "Most Black Americans Believe Racial Conspiracy Theories About U.S. Institutions". Thank you to @JustLeadersUSA's push-back on the use of "racial conspiracy theories" to describe how Black Americans feel re: untrustworthy US institutions.
