With written, informed consent from the patient, my ER colleague and I have submitted for peer review and publication, the case-report of a healthy patient who came to the ER with a worsening sore throat and flu-like symptoms. The physical exam was concerning and bloodwork was diagnostic for acute leukemia.

The bottom line is simple. Doctors, nurses and politicians don't get to tell people when to and when not to go the ER. We rely on and trust the general public to define a medical emergency. That's the best way to ensure the ER is the medical safety net for all Canadians.

Teachers need education degrees. Principals need years of experience. Yet the person running Ontario’s education system doesn’t need a background in education?
Paul Calandra’s background is in insurance, business, and politician, not education. So it’s a fair question: why is someone without professional experience in education making decisions that affect every student, parent, and teacher in this province?
The same standard should apply across government. If you’re in charge of education, have an education background. If you’re in charge of health care, have health care expertise.
Competence shouldn’t be optional. It should be the minimum requirement. #dougfordsucks
