@JonahDispatch If anytime you're put in charge of anything, the person who appointed you sees his popularity plummet and his most popular position sees a huge swing against him, setting the stage for a backlash that makes the thing you supposedly care about much worse, you are the problem.
@redsteeze In their minds, the important aspect is what the journalist feels ("wow, that was embarrassing to admit"), not actually informing the public ("wow, we really need to take action to not lie to the public")
@mattyglesias I wonder what "I cheered for a spree of rape, murder, and kidnapping that the perpetrators recorded and celebrated with almost orgasmic glee" says about a person's moral considerations.
@avidseries Long before he was as explicitly political, I think it was "people who don't want to use my submarine are pedophiles" that revealed what we needed to know about Musk's ability to keep things focused on what matters.
@Noahpinion Hasan thinks it's okay to murder some people if he doesn't like them. How old is that precedent? He doesn't mean anything with this, it's just him wearing the skin suit of a country he already is trying to kill.
@dissproportion Having access to the "leftover movies no one bothered to make exclusive streaming deals" library with Amazon Prime has been a lot of fun for seeing pre-me movies. I find them way easier to watch than contemporary stuff
@HistoryBoomer I'd say it was as jokey as "grab them by the pussy." If you're saying "he could not be convicted of Marxism beyond a reasonable doubt," yeah, maybe not. But with him endorsing Marxists, wanting to seize property from landlords, etc., people aren't responding to nothing.
@HistoryBoomer They think anyone talking in terms of consequences or second-order effects is trying to trick them. The more evidence you provide, the more they think you're trying to pull a fast one.
@TedCaseHill@eigenrobot This means the cards WERE there, Trump was just too stupid to see them because he can't think about the future. And Trump's unwillingness to join Ukraine's drone innovation with America's military is a large part of why Iran asymmetric warfare was so effective.
@eigenrobot I think Putin's next step is to follow the Iran playbook and start attacking other European countries in the hopes they pressure Ukraine to surrender rather than fight back.
@eigenrobot The end game was "Trump makes Ukraine surrender." Ironically, his inability to achieve anything against Russia's ally Iran has the side effect of making him so unpopular and internationally impotent he can't actually pressure Ukraine.
@RichardHanania If the abundance folks agree to be junior partners in a coalition with those who want to destroy the economy, I'm not sure it's unquestionably a good thing. It just takes the few people who know economics and gives their votes to the people who want to burn it down.
@jbarro Because Europeans refuse to accept "consumption = rich," they have to come up with other ways to establish their class structure. So it's literally "you know I'm rich because I'm not next to poor people."
