History gets uncomfortable when the receipts come out.

The first Klan rose during Reconstruction as a white-supremacist force terrorizing Black citizens and Republicans, while Democratic victories across the South helped restore white rule. In 1923, the Women of the KKK formed and quickly grew to roughly 250,000 members.

So spare me the sanctimonious fairy tale that racism has always been a Republican story. America’s history includes a segregationist Democratic South, an anti-slavery Republican founding, and a major party realignment.

Tell the whole damn history or stop pretending it began yesterday.
