At an American house, a man opened the refrigerator without asking.

Nobody reacted. It was not his house.

I asked the host if that was allowed.

He said, "That's Kevin."

That was the whole answer. That is the credential. Kevin has refrigerator access.

I asked how someone gets refrigerator access.

He could not explain it. He said, "You just get it eventually."

I asked how long it takes.

He said, "Depends."

Then he thought about it and said, "Kevin's had it since like 2015."

There is a date. He knows approximately when Kevin was granted it. Nobody granted it. It simply occurred and now it is historical.

I began watching for this. It is real and it is everywhere.

There are people who ask. There are people who ask but are told not to ask. There are people who no longer ask but still announce it, which is a middle tier. And there is Kevin, who opens it silently, takes something, and closes it, and nobody looks up.

I asked what happens if the wrong person opens the fridge.

The host got a strange look and said, "It'd be weird."

That is the entire enforcement mechanism. It would be weird. No consequence. Just weird. That is enough to have kept this system perfectly intact for four hundred years.

I have been at that house eleven times. I still ask.

Last week the host said, "You don't have to ask, man."

I said thank you and then asked again the next time, because being told you may stop asking is not the same as no longer asking, and both of us know the difference.

Whose fridge can you open, and how long did it take.

I wanted to use Trump's threat to levy 50% tariffs on Canada to discuss the behavioral reasons why I believe Trump is so fixated on tariffs.
Two cornerstone objectives for Trump, especially now that he's playing out his final chapter on Earth, are greed and grandiosity. These two things, which interrelate, permeate everything he craves. He is a giant id. He wants awards, he wants things named after him, he wants $10B here and billions more there, and all of that is but a subset of what he really wants: The knowledge and belief that he can do whatever the f*ck he wants.
The legacy media always tries to understand Trump's stubborn fixations by normalizing him and asking: "What's he thinking?"
Allow me: Trump doesn't think; he feels. He craves.
And he likes how tariffs make him feel, because he can be a bully, impose his will, make and remove threats, and cause countries to do his bidding and pay him tribute arbitrarily. THEY FUEL HIS GRANDIOSITY.
How much more American consumers, businesses, and importers pay, is immaterial. None of that matters to Trump. People don't matter. America doesn't matter.
Bullying, imposing his will, being the center of attention, and threatening others, is the essence of what a malignant narcissist does.
It's like America didn't even elect a person.
It elected a pathology.
