Feeling like a failure as a pro DM today because I can’t find my collection of robes cultist figurines to paint to my student’s specifications when we were discussing this season’s antagonists…
Dungeon School
Season 11
Library
The elementary school class started today!
It’s so good to be back.
This season named for the institution (and some say spirit being) known as Library - dedicated to saving every scrap of information from the archons.

I’ve taught hundreds of students to write. I helped some reach college. And #dnd has made that possible.
Making a character *IS* telling a story.
So is playing the game.
But the relative ease with which the mechanics embody storytelling does not extend to other subjects.
I have not had this same experience with other games that don’t carry the complicated legacy #dnd
Without the social, political, religious, and legal baggage of TSR and @Wizards_DnD it’s easier to overcome hesitation
Admittedly - you lose the diehard’s natural enthusiasm too…
I’ve run over 60 pro campaigns across thousands of sessions.
I’ve taught elementary, middle, and high school with #dnd5e focused on writing and art, but also several sciences, history, critical thinking, and SEL skills.
I was even on their podcast.

It’s a legacy game - some mechanics that haven’t changed/improved since 1974.
It’s complex *AND* complicated.
Most people who *WANT* to read the rules can’t remember them all.
While I’ve developed many tools for onboarding disinterested players, some just think it’s silly.
After a decade of using #dnd5e to teach over a dozen subjects, I can say with certainty that Dungeons & Dragons is a terrible educational tool.
Don’t get me wrong - it’s amazing for inspiring writing and art.
But no more so than any other RPG
And in many ways less so
🧵
I LOVE #dnd
It helped me overcome my dyslexia - it was worth fighting to learn those rules!
It literally saved my life when I was homeless as a teen - gave me the power to imagine something better and a community to anchor me.
It made me the writer and teacher I am today.
Gamification is all well and good - being fun into the classroom - sure.
But I’m ready to move on to Curricularization.
Instead of trying to add fun to the boring worker farm that is standardized education, let’s build a whole model around adding learning goals into play.
I’ve been working on curriculums for a research group for a couple of years now -
We’re trying to draw out students and bring them into learning.
I’m convinced we have to start with the kids instead of the content.
No more ‘standards’.
Start where kids ARE

This year’s classes have focused on teaching science concepts in addition to writing.
Today a student correctly identified this du from as a water molecule before I even started giving hints based on our hydrogen atom adventures!

Best moment in class this year came yesterday.
A kid finally really looked at the dungeon room after weeks of clues and experimentation and said
“Oh! We’re in a hydrogen atom!”
