@liz_love_lace USAID was honestly one of the programs I was proud to fund as an American. It did real good in the world, and I respected it a lot. In that sense it's “soft power,” was mostly just making people like us, which seemed like a pretty good outcome.
@liz_love_lace sure, but a lot of the wealthy use charity in general as soft power or propaganda. but that doesn't mean that any amazing research advances or humanitarian outcomes that result from that charity should be looked at with less value.
@liz_love_lace i think it sets a bad precedent if presidents can remove programs they personally don’t like without going through the legal process they’re required to.
@liz_love_lace iagree it’s not the same as killing, but I do think people are dying as a result. I paid taxes expecting some of that to fund USAID because congress (as our representatives) put it there in line with what most Americans supported. ending it is supposed to go through Ccongress.
@liz_love_lace but that's not really his purview. Imagine if this were a law that Congress passed and a former president had approved that had been operating for a long time. Do you think Trump can just repeal the law just because he doesn't agree with it?
@liz_love_lace putting aside whether the infrastructure could be repurposed or refunded, the money was allocated by congress (the representatives of we the people) for this charity program
