FORECAST SNOW TOTALS UPDATE...
WHEN: Starting Thursday morning in western Arkansas and expanding across the state by afternoon. Timing graphic in comments.
DETAILS: Widespread 5+ inch totals are expected from southwest into central Arkansas and along the I-40 corridor.
MORE THAN 8"? There will almost certainly be a band of 8 to 12 inches of snow in there somewhere, but it's going to be driven by small scale bands that won't be evident until tomorrow morning. Right now I think it favors western and maybe into central Arkansas.
SOUTH ARKANSAS: The hardest part of this forecast is for south Arkansas. Moisture will be plentiful, but freezing rain and sleet will cut down on snow totals in this part of the state.
Over a tenth of an inch of freezing rain is expected from El Dorado to Monticello. Significant amounts of sleet may also fall across south Arkansas before a transition to snow.
The zone immediately north of the transition area to freezing rain and sleet will see significant snow totals of 4+ inches. Right now our best guess is that area is roughly an Ashdown to Arkadelphia to Pine Bluff line and points north.
Bottom line... A high impact storm gets going tomorrow morning and continues through Friday. Severe travel disruptions are likely!
