KFS Forest Rangers and Community Scouts Conduct Joint Access Control
Today operations at Karura Forest have continued as normal, with KFS Forest Rangers and Scouts of the Friends of Karura Forest (FKF) Community Forest Association (CFA),conducting joint access control at all points of entry. This cordial working relationship will continue as the Service is obliged to work with the CFA in co –management of this vital resource.
Speaking to a section of the press today, the Chief Conservator of Forests, Mr Alex Lemarkoko reiterated the Service’s commitment to sustainable conservation and co -management of Karura. He assured the public and stakeholders that the move to the government’s e-Citizen platform is a compliance measure to enhance transparency and accountability.
The CCF further called upon the Friends of Karura Forest (FKF), the long-standing Community Forest Association, to continue working hand in hand with KFS. “We run the forest jointly through the Forest Management Committee, which includes three members from FKF and three from KFS. Development plans, work plans, and budgets are approved through this framework. The Service is only complying with the law, and community involvement remains at the center of Karura’s future,” he said.
Karura Forest has, over the years, evolved to serve Nairobi residents and visitors as a green urban space for recreation and wellness, receiving over half a million visitors annually. Facilities such as walking and cycling trails, picnic sites, and the potential for new activities reflect the immense values of conservation. Within the forest, road networks and infrastructure improvements are carefully confined to staff quarters and operational areas, ensuring both accessibility and ecological integrity.
Security and day-to-day operations remain unchanged andKFS Forest rangers continue to work closely with community scouts to safeguard the forest and support visitors. The public is therefore encouraged to continue patronizing this pristine green space. Karura Forest stands today as a model of urban conservation in Africa, demonstrating the value of partnerships between government and communities. By embracing digitization and upholding co-management, KFS seeks to protect Karura for generations to come, while ensuring accountability, sustainability, and improved visitor experience.

PS Edward Kisiang’ani: Government can only fight corruption within the provisions of the constitution. We must use our institutions to fight corruption (EACC, DCI). The Government cannot fight corruption by picking people from the streets and taking them to court. Any government which does that is bound to fail. #TheShift
