We have received notifications that traffic signals are currently out due to the storm at the following intersections:

• Byhalia Road at Collierville Road
• Houston Levee Road at Highway 385
When traffic signals are not working, Tennessee law requires drivers to treat the intersection as a four-way stop.

What to do:
• Come to a complete stop
• Yield to vehicles that arrived first
• If two vehicles arrive at the same time, yield to the driver on your right
• Proceed only when safe
• Watch carefully for pedestrians and emergency vehicles

Please slow down, be patient, and use extra caution during the storm. Public Works and utility crews have been notified.

🚧 Road Conditions Update – 6:30 a.m. 🚧

Road conditions continue to improve across most areas.

Primary roadways, including Poplar Avenue, Byhalia Road, and Winchester Road, now have one, and in some locations, two passable travel lanes. Secondary roads have also shown improvement and are clear in many areas.

However, sections with limited sunlight and less-traveled areas remain slick as built-up ice continues to break apart. Overnight temperatures refroze some of these areas, creating slick conditions. Despite lower temperatures expected today, we anticipate continued road improvements as we move toward the weekend.

Drivers should remain cautious, especially in areas with larger patches of ice that are still melting and may be difficult to see.

Please allow extra travel time this morning and drive safely. This will be our final daily update on road conditions. If conditions change dramatically, we will post another update.

🚧 Road Conditions Update – 6:30 a.m. 🚧

Road conditions have improved since yesterday due to higher daytime temperatures.

Primary roadways continue to have one, and in some areas two, passable travel lanes. However, slick spots remain as ice continues to break apart, so motorists should remain alert.

Drivers are urged to exercise extra caution in areas with larger patches of ice. Incoming rain will help melt icy surfaces but may also create slushy, uneven road conditions. Bridges, overpasses, shaded areas, and less-traveled roads may still have thicker ice and will take longer to fully clear.

Untreated and lesser-traveled roads have also shown improvement. Gradual improvement is expected to continue over the next few days as temperatures remain noticeably warmer.

Please allow extra time if you must travel this morning, and leave sufficient distance from other vehicles to brake safely.

Untreated and lesser-traveled roads remain largely ice-covered and hazardous. With warmer temperatures expected, significant improvements are anticipated over the next few days as melting continues. Please continue to use caution if travel is necessary.

For the past several days, we’ve been reminding parents and caregivers to talk with their children about the dangers of frozen lakes and ponds.

Yesterday, if you have been watching the news, two children fell in a pond at an apartment complex in Shelby County. Thanks to the efforts of deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office and the Shelby County Fire Department, the children were saved but still in the hospital. One Shelby County deputy was also injured.

When someone falls through ice, the body goes into immediate cold shock. Breathing becomes rapid and uncontrollable, strength is lost quickly, and it can be extremely difficult to pull yourself out due to slippery ice edges. Hypothermia can set in within minutes, especially for children, making rescue more difficult and survival time very short.

Ice may look solid, but it is dangerously thin and unpredictable — especially near edges, drains, and moving water. Please talk with your children about staying off frozen bodies of water and closely supervise outdoor play during winter weather.

One conversation can prevent a tragedy — and keep both children and first responders safe.

🚧 Road Update – 6:40 a.m. 🚧

Officers report that primary roadways generally have at least one drivable lane; however, motorists should remain cautious, as black ice remains present. Entrance and exit ramps along Highway 385 continue to have significant ice buildup and remain slick.

Secondary roads remain mostly unchanged and are still covered with ice, as shown in the photos.

Collierville Public Works & Utilities and the Tennessee Department of Transportation are actively working throughout the day to clear and treat roadways. Gradually warming temperatures are expected to aid crews and improve conditions as the day progresses.

If possible, please avoid traveling. If you must be on the road, slow down, allow extra time, and maintain a greater following distance to ensure safe braking.

We continue to receive calls about children playing on frozen ponds and lakes. As temperatures begin to warm, the ice becomes weaker and the risk of breaking through increases significantly. What may look solid can be extremely dangerous and life-threatening.

Parents and guardians, please talk with your children about staying off frozen ponds and lakes. If you see anyone on the ice, call 911 immediately.

🚧 Road Update – 6:00 PM 🚧

Today, the sunshine helped make bigger improvements on primary roads and some secondary roads. Many multi-lane roads now have at least one mostly clear lane, though black ice remains a concern. Some secondary roads, along with neighborhood streets, are still snow- and ice-covered.

With the continued work of Collierville Public Works and TDOT, we should see more improvement tomorrow as temperatures rise above freezing. However, overnight lows tonight are expected to fall into the mid-teens, so refreezing will occur.

Where plows have improved main roads, snow buildup at intersections may make it difficult to transition safely from one roadway to another. Please slow down, watch for black ice, and use extra caution—especially at intersections.

The photos shared generally represent conditions throughout Collierville. We often get asked about specific roads, but at this time, most roads look similar to what is pictured. If you don’t have to be out, please consider staying home and allowing crews time to continue their work.

The Collierville Police Department received multiple calls today regarding children on ice-covered ponds and lakes, including Johnson Park and several area apartment complexes.

Ice conditions are extremely dangerous and unpredictable. Even if the ice appears solid, it can break without warning and create a life-threatening situation.

-Parents and guardians: Please speak with your children about the dangers of playing on frozen water.
-Everyone: Stay off ice-covered ponds and lakes.

If you see someone on the ice or in danger, call 911 immediately.

Officers report hazardous conditions on both primary and secondary roadways this morning. While improvements were made by Collierville Public Works & Utilities and the Tennessee Department of Transportation, extreme temperatures have continued to create slick and dangerous driving conditions.

Overnight call volume remained light, and our Charlie Shift officers appreciate everyone who chose to stay home and off the roads.

Please avoid travel unless it is absolutely necessary.
