Woken up this morning wanting to know how local government spending on culture has changed since the onset of austerity? My paper with @Peter_Soc is available open access @CulturalTrends_ looking at spending patterns between 2009/10 - 2018/19 https://t.co/T5pBgyE65A. #museums

Lovely to see my work with @Peter_Soc cited in this think-piece linked to the @BritishAcademy_ cultural infrastructure project. Feel like I only ever tweet about that article which is funny what with it being an unexpected lockdown project.
. @LGAcomms think piece—The case for "cultural infrastructure"
@michaelkenny_, @OJGarling & @StephCoulter8 highlight the value & impact of culture, heritage & sport not only economically but also in shaping people’s sense of wellbeing & local attachment.

A great piece of work! @BenWalmsley: "To demystify the processes involved in policymaking, the @valuingculture collaborated with the @DCMS to develop a new resource for academic researchers: How to shape cultural policy through research" https://t.co/DomSbNALBi
Great to see cuts to culture being discussed in @guardian but these averages create a false picture of similarity. As my work w/ @Peter_Soc shows, the real story is not about uniform cuts but variation and thus deepening inequalities in service provision. https://t.co/L6EmzKEf0h
Analysis by @guardian shows between 2010-11 & 2022-23 real terms council spending fell in all areas bar social care:
- cultural services cut by 43%,
- roads & transport by 40%
- housing by 35%
- planning & development by a third
And more planned cuts ahead…
I was lucky enough to have a sneak preview of this and can say it's great - must read for anyone interested not only in parks but also local government & cultural/social infrastructure
So it turns out Blue Monday is when Culture, Participation, Policy and the Municipal Public Park is published @Palgrave
Thanks to everyone who helped get it out - for all who love & understand the cultural importance of parks 💚

@bushofears @DrJennie_Morgan sorry for massive delay - yes aiming to set up some sort of discussions about this - a small handful of us working on this now - in the spring. will keep you posted. hope you're well.
@HECreativEcon thanks - slow progress (new parent, etc.) - i've already done the research, so it'll be about museums - desperately need more work on libraries though. Wonder if @DrAliceCorble knows anyone doing this?
Hampshire Cultural Trust (HCT) has given Fareham Borough Council 12 months’ notice that it will be closing Westbury Manor Museum at the end of this year

@FionaCandlin@tootinghistory the west hill building (where the museum was when it was run following the hintze donation) is now leased to a nursery - the collections remain in storage in the basement
