Why Current Vitamin D Recommendations Are Too Low – A Scientific Look at the Evidence
Vitamin D is much more than just a bone-health nutrient. It plays a critical role in immune function, cardiovascular health, neurological balance, and even cancer prevention. Yet while international experts are calling for higher daily doses, Germany and Switzerland still cling to outdated and insufficient guidelines.

Studies consistently show that optimal blood levels of vitamin D lie between 40–60 ng/ml (100–150 nmol/l) – levels naturally achieved in sun-rich regions near the equator. In northern climates, however, this is impossible with the current official recommendation of just 800–1000 IU per day.

While countries like Canada and the U.S. already recognize higher doses as safe, Germany and Switzerland stick to outdated limits. The Endocrine Society deems up to 10,000 IU/day as safe – a stark contrast to the European cap of just 4,000 IU.
