Something in this rings true....Something about sharing all of you, not just what is easy to give. And something about really sharing lives with people who you may perceive as different to you, and discovering they are not so much.
I used to lead thousands of volunteers to give away shit to poor people during the holidays. We loved being on the news, showing off “Christ’s love”.
Then I became friends w the recipients. It was brave of them to tell me how humiliated my selfishness made them feel.
Christmas challenge: learn a song - get the backing track off the internet and sing it as sincerely as you can with all your heart to your family on Christmas Day. And make all your family do this too. I promise it’ll be better than the telly.
On a friend's coat today...It's hard to argue with this plain statement I find....seeing this cost hanging in church while we rehearsed a community Christmas play put it in a new context for me...
Today @BorisJohnson lied to the BBC, claiming child poverty had gone down.
In fact, it’s gone up every year since 2010. Now, a staggering 4.1 million British children live in poverty.
A government allowing this is disgusting.
A prime minister lying about it is inexcusable.
An apt prayer for winter just discovered....
Deepen my roots in the dark earth.
May they spread in silence, hidden from view.
May I grow steadily like the sturdy oak,
Slowly reaching to the sky of my destiny. #Advent#oaksofrighteousness#pioneeringprayer

#clergyconf John 6...The narrative comes after food...Do we have the liturgy of the word in the wrong place?? The only way people at Derwent Oak feel safe and together enough to try to listen and share is after eating together.
The tide cuts us off from the world then exposes us to it again, then draws us back to presence. Breathe in, breathe out. Reinforicing the rhythms of action and contemplation with St Aidan and Bishop Jack yesterday. #pioneeringprayer#activecontemplative#derbyclergyconf19
This is so true....and ironically heating our church building is precisely the point where we are too. The other creativity in mission is not a problem for people here, nor is finding funding for that. Funding is hard to find for posts and buildings. Not sexy, but essential.
And an important article in the Church Times about Lowest Income Communities Funding. Sounds anoraky? Read on, especially if you're from an urban parish or community: https://t.co/kaUrQ0ACfv
