As German film star Iris Berben reminded us, “Art & culture are not luxuries. They are the foundation of an open society.”

Hosted by festival co-directors @JakobGatzka & @martinmodlinger, the evening brought together a full house, moving conversations & a community committed to remembrance, human rights & the power of storytelling. We were honored to share this special moment with German film stars Iris Berben & Julia Teichmann.

Today we celebrate the life of Lina Banda Weber, born July 16th, 1899 — my biological grandmother.

A devoted mother whose courage, determination & compassion shaped generations to come, Lina never stopped fighting for her family & for others, working tirelessly to secure visas & passports for those trying to escape Nazi Germany. Though her life was tragically cut short at Auschwitz in 1943, her legacy lives on through 72+ descendants & the countless lives her story continues to touch through @unbrokenthefilm.

I am writing this from 35,000 miles in the air, flying to Munich for the long-awaited German Premiere of UnBroken. Destination: Dachau, for the @LichtbrückeHumanRightsFilmFestival, and the timing is beshert. July 16th marks nine years since my first visit to the farm in @Worin, 60 km East of Berlin, where my grandmother's seven Jewish children — including my mother — were hidden by two Christian farmers who refused to be bystanders. That visit I made a vow in 2017: to make this film. Nine years later, UnBroken is finally coming home.
Happy birthday, Lina. May this day stand for all of us to choose to be upstanders.
