This is not satire. This is the current government of Iran.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps assembled for a formal ceremony to pledge allegiance to Mojtaba Khamenei, the newly appointed Supreme Leader. Mojtaba was not present. Not because he was busy. Not because of scheduling conflicts. According to reports, Mojtaba is unconscious. So the IRGC — the most powerful military force in the Middle East for the past four decades, the organization that funded proxy armies across seven countries and k!lled 1,500 Americans with IEDs — stood in formation and pledged allegiance to a poster board printed at what one observer described as Iranian Kinko's.

They went from D*ath to America to a cardboard Ayatollah in one week.

The backstory gets worse. Reports indicate Mojtaba lost a leg in the same Israeli strike that k!lled his father. He has been hospitalized multiple times for severe health problems. Newsom’s answer: California has Nobel laureates. 32 of the top 50 AI companies. $405 billion in manufacturing output. The fourth largest economy in the world. More farmers. More ranchers. More patents.

Here is the problem with that answer.

Nobel laureates don’t help the kid in Fresno who can’t read at grade level. Venture capital doesn’t pay the rent for the family living in a tent on the sidewalk in Los Angeles. Being the fourth largest economy in the world while simultaneously having the highest poverty rate in America is not a success story — it is an indictment. It means the wealth is being generated and it is not reaching the people at the bottom.

On Mississippi schools, Newsom’s defense was that Mississippi holds kids back in third grade, which inflates their scores.

Mississippi’s third grade retention policy — the one Newsom is dismissing as a gimmick — requires students to demonstrate reading proficiency before advancing. The result is that Mississippi students now rank among the fastest-improving in the nation. Holding children accountable for learning to read before moving on turns out to produce children who can read. That’s the scandal Newsom is trying to explain away.

On poverty: Newsom said the supplemental poverty rate has been higher in California since Ronald Reagan left office as governor. He said it himself. He has been Governor since 2019. He has been in California Democratic politics for two decades. His party has controlled the state legislature without interruption. And his answer for the highest poverty rate in America is: it’s been this way since Reagan.

This is the man who wants to be President of the United States.
