I 100% get why some people aren’t into the TCG meta and would rotate into projects that align better with their interests.
What I don’t get is panic-dumping before we even understand how the reroll mechanics will work, and before seeing the final art fully revealed. 🏴☠️
Memeland Captainz floor dropped 15% after the townhall. People selling and worried about reroll mechanics.
I went the other direction. Pulled the actual USPTO trademark documents, checked MemeStrategy's board changes, read every filing I could find.
-----
1/ The trademark.
@9GAG filed "THE CAPTAINZ" with the USPTO in January 2023. Serial number 97748679. Five international classes. The goods description in Class 9 reads, word for word: "digital collectibles in the nature of downloadable multimedia files in the fields of trading cards, authenticated by NFTs."
Trading cards. In the trademark filing. January 2023. The community only found out about the TCG mechanic last week. Planned from day one.
The trademark was approved September 2024. They've been filing extensions since. No Statement of Use yet. Deadline: September 2027. Memeday is June 9.
Connect those two dates.

2/ The board.
@MemeStrategy Inc. is the publicly listed vehicle @9gagceo set up by acquiring a Hong Kong shell company in April 2025. Same core team runs 9GAG, Memeland, and MemeStrategy.
In April 2026, one month before the Captainz Reborn reveal, the board made a swap.
Out: Wesley Ng, CEO of CASETiFY. Phone cases. Physical accessories.
In: Kun Gao. Co-founder of Crunchyroll. The anime streaming platform Sony acquired for $1.175 billion. He also runs Forge, a gaming rewards platform, and co-founded GGWP, a gaming community safety company.
Merch person out. Anime and gaming person in. One month before revealing anime-quality art and a 60,000-card TCG system.
-----
3/ The rest of the board tells the same story.
Sandy Peng. Co-founder of Scroll, the zkEVM Layer 2. Former Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission. On-chain card trading infrastructure and regulatory compliance in one seat.
Alex Lee, CIO, came from founding teams of licensed virtual asset trading platforms in Hong Kong. Kevin Kwong, CBO, ran marketing at OSL Group, a licensed exchange.
A financial infrastructure and entertainment IP board. Sitting behind what most people still call a PFP project.
-----
4/ 60,000 cards.
The townhall revealed 60,000 hand-drawn cards across 6 races, 9 rarity tiers, 7 character variants each. Every card is anime quality.
That's a character library. The kind of asset base you build before licensing to anime studios, game developers, or physical card manufacturers.
The reroll mechanic is a valid short-term concern. I've written about it separately.
But the floor price is pricing a PFP. The trademark, the board, and the art are pricing a franchise.
Kun Gao, Sandy Peng, Alex Lee.. I don't think 9GAG put these people on a public company board to watch a floor chart.
Memeland Captainz just showed their new art. I sat through the full townhall so you don't have to.
Short version: they're turning 9,999 pirate PFPs into a 60,000-card TCG collection. Every single card is hand-drawn, anime quality. And they're launching on Memeday, June 9.
1/ Six races. Each race gets its own characters.
- Humans have 6 base characters, 3 male and 3 female.
- Kraken, Shark, Kaiju, Alien get 2 each.
- Kong gets 1 male (Sun Wukong inspired, staff and all).
- Every character has 7 variants.
- The total pool is 60,000 unique cards.
2/ Now the mechanism.
Your NFT is now a pack. Today the metadata swapped. If you already revealed your race, you see a race-specific pack. Humans get human cards, Kongs get Kong cards. If you never revealed, you get a mystery pack (black, question mark).
Ripping is free. You pull 1 card from the 60,000 pool. 9 rarity tiers from base (white border, no effects) up to SSR.
3/ SSR is where potions come in.
300 SSRs exist in the entire 60,000 pool. 3 of those are absolute one-of-ones. SSRs are only accessible through potions. No potion, no chance at SSR.
There are 3,700 potions spread across about 120 wallets. You can mix up to 3 potions per draw. Different combos (red+blue, red+blue+clear) give different boost profiles. And starting now, potions become transferable.
A secondary potion market is about to form. If you hold potions, you're holding the only key to the rarest 0.5% of the collection.
4/ Card design
Border-based rarity like sports TCGs. Base cards have white borders with glare effects. Higher tiers get foils, special borders, character art that pops out of the card frame. Pokémon holographics meets anime illustration.
The 1/1s are poster-style pieces. Every character in the Captainz universe on one card. Pokémon-inspired layout. 3 exist in 60,000.
5/ Launch date is almost certainly June 9. Memeday. The team said "we like the number 9" and "busy June." They've updated the website, added a new Story tab with full lore, and the metadata is already live.
I've been holding through the ugly art era. This is the pivot. The art is the best I've seen from any NFT project in 2026. And the TCG layer gives collectors something to actually do with their NFTs beyond hold and hope.
The product is ready. Now it needs the market to pay attention.

At 0.25 ETH, Memeland's art rework is a high-cost rescue mission, not a victory lap.
A 97% drop from the peak of 9 ETH is the market's brutal verdict on a two-year operational delay. In Web3, momentum lost is almost impossible to regain.
But executing a bad plan is worse than being late.
The team refused to let the ecosystem bleed out. They are using Web2 cash reserves to fund a massive visual overhaul and replace the entire metadata library.
The new cinematic art is exceptional. The dynamic sword poses, volumetric fire effects, and sharp details are designed for genuine aesthetic appeal.
This is a necessary surrender. The team accepted that speculative utility is dead. They are buying back community trust with world-class art.
With the speculative froth completely washed out, only high-conviction holders remain.
Don't expect an instant floor pump. But expect a solid foundation for survival.
3 years, hundreds of iterations, we're not stopping just yet.
