On Jan. 25 my 17 year old daughter, Kayla, received a vaccine for Meningitis B. The name of the vaccine is Bexsero. It was approved for use in the US in 2015.

She had a severe adverse reaction, and has been battling for 41 days... In and out of the hospital. I’ve always tried my best to be diligent and responsible when it comes to my children’s health care. I’ve also followed recommendations from the Pediatrician.

When skimming over the list of side effects or adverse reactions you never think it’ll be your child. I mean, what are the chances? (Doctors certainly don’t discuss side effects with you.) But, what happens when it is your child? What happens when the Doctor tells you this is a rare occurrence and there isn’t much we can do? You are left feeling helpless and afraid. What if those vaccine info sheets had pictures of real children instead of just numbers or percentages? My child is now one of those statistics. Her photo would be there. I’m telling you this, because I wish someone would have told me. I’m simply telling you to do your own research and ask the doctor questions.

In Kaylas case, this vaccine was not “required”. It was “recommended”. I was not aware of that at the time..... In other words; She didn’t “NEED” it to attend college. And it turns out, this one has MANY common side effects. I was never told this information either. I trusted someone else to have my child’s best interest at heart. A regret that I’ll always live with. I implore you to take time to research before saying YES to anything that someone wants to inject into your child. Once it’s in, it cannot come out. Healthcare should not be a “one size fits all” system.
