This is Sir Frederick Banting. He discovered insulin in 1923.
But he refused to put his name on the patent. Why?
Because Banting felt it was unethical to profit from a discovery that would save lives.
But pharmaceutical companies made huge financial offers to Banting for the patent, knowing they could make billions.
They even sweetened the deal, offering an insulin clinic, with Sir Banting in charge... a temping offer to almost doctor in his position.
Banting, however, said his discovery of isolated insulin was a gift to mankind. He felt this critical medicine should be available to everyone who needed it.
In 1923, Banting was just 31 years old when he was awarded the Nobel Prize.
Tragically, in 1941 while flying on a plane to personally protect scientific secrets from the Nazis, his plane crashed. He was killed.
Banting's co-inventors, in his honor, sold the patent for insulin to the University of Toronto for the appropriate sum they thought appropriate – one dollar.
Today, 30 million Americans with diabetes rely on his gift to mankind.
To honor Sir Frederick Banting, it should remain a gift to mankind.
TW: falsely associating LGBTQIA people with child predators.
I feel obligated, as a child protection professional, to point out that this response by Babylon Bee editor Joel Berry to @mattnightingale is wildly untrue. It's not only untrue, it's a dangerous lie.
“They weren’t expecting his boyfriend to be feminine.” That’s the excuse I was given after my ex in laws terrorized my gay child with homophobia at a family dinner. He took his own life the next day. All this hate in the world is killing our children. My child deserved better.
A British writer penned the best description of Donald Trump I’ve ever read:
“Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?”
A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.
Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.
Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.
There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul. And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.
And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead. There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down.
So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:
• Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.
• You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.
This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum. God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump.
And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: ‘My God… what… have… I… created?' If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.”

BREAKING: Legal experts sound the alarm as Trumper judge Aileen Cannon quietly makes her move to rig the classified documents case in Trump’s favor, announces that she will be moving the case from liberal-leaning West Palm Beach to a Republican district.
But it gets WAY worse…
This is devastating news for Special Counsel Jack Smith because legal experts say that the jury pool will be tainted by Trump supporters who are likely to give Trump a pass no matter how much incriminating evidence is produced during the trial.
Experts say that Judge Aileen Cannon’s shameless decision “means that Trump’s jurors are set to be drawn from, “The most brightly red corner of a vast court district, plucked from a community that leans heavily Republican — instead of the highly populous and more Democratic urban areas further south” — which will give Trump a “highly favorable jury pool.”
Another legal expert responded today’s news by declaring that “Trump is going to have a bunch of supporters” in the new venue, and “they’re going to make their way onto the jury panel.”
So there you have it, folks: the fix is in.
Please retweets and ❤️ if you think that Trumper judge Aileen Cannon must be removed from the case IMMEDIATELY!
Please take a moment to thank #RubyFreeman and her daughter #ShayeMoss for bringing attention to the attempts to overturn the Georgia vote. These brave women were threatened by #RudyGiuliani & #HarrisonFloyd non-stop yet fought for accountability. RT if you're grateful to them.
They waited patiently for more than 50 years to stack the courts and turn America back to our darkest days of radical inequality.
In just a little more than a year, the compromised and corrupt conservative SCOTUS trashed decades of progress and precedents.
They decided that student loan forgiveness during a national emergency was an “overreach”, but PPP Loan forgiveness was not.
They decided that leveling the playing field and providing an equal opportunity at a high-quality education for black people and POC was unfair, but legacy admissions was not.
They decided that if you call yourself a conservative Christian you can refuse to provide services for same-sex marriages.
They decided that they, not women, have the right to decide on their own reproductive health care.
The Supreme Court, having divorced itself from the fundamental basis of our legal system, honoring precedent, is now a ruling political party legislating from the bench.
Think they’re going to stop here?
Elections matter.

In light of today's Supreme Court decision to dismantle Affirmative Action, it is crucial to clarify a common misconception that has been perpetuated by numerous articles and commentators. The purpose of Affirmative Action was never about providing an undue 'boost' to minorities. Rather, it was conceived as a means to foster equity.
Understanding this concept is of paramount importance. The difference between equality and equity is significant and acknowledging this distinction is a crucial part of recognizing our historical context.
To date, I have not observed any Supreme Court decision that seems to fully grasp this nuanced concept. This may be because the issue at hand is not strictly legal, but rather, it is deeply rooted in the principles of social science. It's a complex situation where law and social understanding intersect, and it requires a comprehensive understanding of both to navigate effectively.
Nine people would be alive today if the shooter hadn’t had a semi-automatic weapon and high-capacity magazines.
I lay it all out in my Substack. It’s the fucking guns.

Three members of the Tennessee Democratic Party are facing expulsion from the legislature tonight as the GOP leadership is trying to have these 3 members excluded from the body. Thus stripping away duly elected members from serving . Their crime was asking the Speaker why they were not allowed to speak on the House floor During debate about guns. So now the GOP majority is going to throw them out of the Tennessee House. We must fight this. @newblueknox@NewBlueTenn #DemVoice1 @newbluehamilton @NewBlue5th
We can’t keep moving on without first digging in our heels and demanding what’s right, even if it hurts. Nothing will change in an America that values whiteness above everything else if we, those of us who can, refuse to make a different choice.

This narrative avoids telling the often-brutal history of civil rights by ignoring the complicity of law enforcement, downplaying the racist tactics and the dirty politics, and eliding the role many white citizens played during Jim Crow.
