@LaudableJulia 2. The beetle sprays when disturbed or irritated. You'll hear something like a shrill, pop sound when the spray is released. It's a very distinct sound.
Your photo looks very similar to these beetles. Perhaps it's one of them, but I'm not 100% sure.
@LaudableJulia 1. Because the spray comes out very hot, it can cause burns on the skin. And it has a very foul, persistent smell.
According to some sources, the effect on humans may be only temporary. But there are some cases where medical attention was required.
