Created worked examples for 1st graders in BOY for making tens. Also thought about how to explicitly teach making ten w/ number strings. I'd love any feedback or other ideas on how to start this work with 1st graders. @LauraAndKarina@MelAGCampbell@AmandaG49691932
Change in a teacher's practice or a student's use of fluency strategies won't happen all at once. Set a goal to grow in one skill. Work at it until is becomes a routine and then move on to the next skill. Growth will happen over time. #FiguringOutFluency@LauraAndKarina
@rogersjp3@MelAGCampbell@kimmontague@fadra_rogers I like this one too for K-2! Students need to leave K-2 with a strong foundation of 10 and multiples of 10 so they can be successful with larger numbers and additional operations in 3-5. This is a great game to help solidify those ideas!!
@MelAGCampbell@kimmontague@fadra_rogers I am reviewing games from #FiguringOutFluency (p 75) Fill The Chart will work well with 3rd grade as students learn basic facts. Introducing the game first in small groups will keep the focus on relationships.
The number line shows whole numbers, decimals, & fractions. You can change the start number and the interval between tick marks. You can also remove all numbers and students can add text based on the numbers they need. You can also show bars for "jumps." Lots of great tools!
Sentence frames such as, "I know 10x__ is __. One less group of __ is __. That helps me know 9x__ is __." will keep students focused on the relationship between x10 and x9.
Explicit math instruction is not sit and get. Effective explicit instruction provides intentional sequences of models or expressions to allow students to see math strategies in action and to make meaningful connections. @LauraAndKarina#FiguringOutFluency
Mathematical Fluency is an equity issue. All students need to develop the flexibility of mathematics that fluency allows. It is out job as math leaders to disrupt the current view on fluency and develop in teachers a rocket view on fluency. @LauraAndKarina#figuringoutfluency
Dear parents,
It will be a lot harder to help kids through trauma than from gaps in academics from this pandemic.
Love your kid and keep them healthy physically and emotionally. Read with them too. The rest is just icing.

3 things I hope parents & the public will now appreciate a little bit more about educators:
1. How huge the responsibility it is.
2. How much planning and preparation goes into being an educator.
3. The magnitude of putting someone elseโs child first & often before ones own.
This pandemic has already revealed that:
- schools are so much more than just schools.
- many people now realize how tough it is to be a teacher and that teachers are grossly underpaid.
- teachers are irreplaceable and essential to learning and education.
