On Aug. 31, 2019, police stormed the Prince Edward MTR station, using batons and tear gas against unarmed passengers.

Seven years later, not a single police officer has been held accountable for the violence of that night.

Questions remain unanswered. What happened inside Prince Edward station after journalists were forced to leave? What happened beyond the viewfinders?

What we do know is this: Hong Kongers were met with violence for speaking up and defending the freedoms they'd been promised.

Later, these words appeared on the walls of the station: “There is no hero descending from heaven, only ordinary people stepping up.” A reminder of the courage of ordinary Hong Kongers who refused to stay silent.

Our military has captured two Chinese citizens who were fighting as part of the Russian army. This happened on Ukrainian territory—in the Donetsk region. Identification documents, bank cards, and personal data were found in their possession.

We have information suggesting that there are many more Chinese citizens in the occupier's units than just these two. We are currently verifying all the facts—intelligence, the Security Service of Ukraine, and the relevant units of the Armed Forces are working on it.

I have instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to immediately contact Beijing and clarify how China intends to respond to this.

Russia's involvement of China, along with other countries, whether directly or indirectly, in this war in Europe is a clear signal that Putin intends to do anything but end the war. He is looking for ways to continue fighting. This definitely requires a response. A response from the United States, Europe, and all those around the world who want peace.

The captured Chinese citizens are now in the custody of the Security Service of Ukraine.

Relevant investigative and operational actions are ongoing.

The first two captured Chinese citizens. Today, investigators from the Security Service of Ukraine spoke with them. We are working to establish all the facts regarding the involvement of these and other Chinese citizens being part of the Russian occupation army. Ukrainian intelligence is also working on this matter.

As of now, we have precise data on over 150 Chinese citizens who were involved in the war against Ukraine by Russia. We know that the actual number is higher. Ukraine believes that such blatant involvement of Chinese citizens in hostilities on the territory of Ukraine during the war of aggression is a deliberate step towards the expansion of the war, and is yet another indication that Moscow simply needs to drag out the fighting.

Russia doesn't care who dies in this insane war, they only need the war to continue. We all need—all partners, all fair-minded participants in international relations—to deprive Russia of the ability to continue the war, including through the use of people like these.
