Well said, Harry Kane. England’s captain very strong on player withdrawals in interview with @gabrielclarke05 @itvfootball. Some are genuinely injured, some have issues that simply need managing but could play if a big match was looming. Some may simply be rested because of the intensity of the season and widely-expressed concerns about player workload/fatigue.

Clubs understandably want to protect their players, especially those with niggles, but worth remembering that some will be heading out to the Club World Cup next summer or on tour when their players could be resting.

The old club-versus-country tension was largely eased by Gareth Southgate as players wanted to report for camps. There was a good atmosphere, they had a chance of silverware (ultimately unfulfilled) and many knew each other well from the expanded age-group pathway. There were very few withdrawals. Talking to Clarke, Kane pointed out that Southgate had brought back “the joy to play for England. Every camp, people were excited to come, every camp people wanted to play for England. That's the most important thing.”

England’s record goalscorer added, “I think England comes before anything, that comes before club. England is the most important thing you play as a professional footballer. Gareth was hot on that, and he weren't afraid to make decisions if that started to drift from certain players.”

On the withdrawals, Kane told Clarke, “it's a shame this week. It's a tough period of the season and maybe there's been taken advantage of that little bit. I don't really like it if I'm totally honest. England comes before anything, any club situation.”

The England situation has not been helped by the prospect of a long flight to Athens, a difficult game against Greece, a Nations League group that looks difficult to win and the injury issues at clubs that currently see 90+ Premier League players hors de combat.

Arguably, most significantly is the fact that the incoming head coach, Thomas Tuchel, is himself not involved. He starts on Jan 1, new year, new tournament to target. If England fail to win, Tuchel’s first games in March will be Nations League play-offs, not launching down the road to the 2026 World Cup finals as hoped. Tuchel should be in Athens, getting to know the players better, having team meetings, talking the players through his philosophy and tactics. If Tuchel were in Athens, you could bet more players would be there. #ENG

David Coote’s career, certainly at any significant level, is obviously over. He wasn’t a particularly good referee but it looks like he needs help. And some new friends. This is a personal and professional humiliation for him and also deeply damaging for the refereeing community. Refs are going to have their decisions questioned even more. PGMOL has a major task on its hands to restore faith in officials. It’s not a great generation of refs but it’s worth remembering that there’s never been more simulation and scrutiny and they are human beings.
