When a Great Cover Makes You Hear a Familiar Song Differently

Some songs are so closely tied to one singer that it feels strange to hear anyone else perform them. “Woman in Love” is one of those songs for me. Barbra Streisand’s version is so familiar that it is easy to assume there is really only one way to sing it.

Then I heard Pina Del Re and the Hindley Street Country Club.

What caught my attention was that she doesn't seem to be trying to become Streisand. She takes the song as it is and gives it her own voice. That sounds simple, but with a song this well known, it is probably one of the hardest things to do.

Streisand's original has a huge emotional presence. Her voice moves from the quiet opening into those long, powerful notes, and by the time the chorus arrives, the feeling has become almost overwhelming. It is dramatic, but it works because she makes the words sound personal.

The melody also does a lot of the work. It starts quietly, builds little by little, and keeps asking the singer for more. By the time she reaches the biggest parts, there is very little room to hide. You need both the technique to handle the notes and enough emotion to make them mean something.

Pina Del Re handles it differently.

Her voice sounds strong and clean, but there is less of that larger-than-life quality. She doesn't push every line as if she has to prove something. Instead, she lets the melody breathe. Even when she reaches the higher notes and holds them for a long time, the performance still feels controlled.

I especially like the way she approaches the repeated “over and over again.” It would be easy to turn that moment into a vocal showpiece. Instead, she keeps the feeling at the center.

The live arrangement changes the atmosphere too. Rather than surrounding the song with the same kind of lush orchestration as the original recording, the band gives it a more direct, live feel. You can hear the instruments supporting the singer instead of everything blending into one huge production.

And that makes me wonder if comparing a cover to the original is sometimes the wrong way to listen.

Streisand's version will probably always be the one many people remember first. It has earned that place. But a good cover doesn't necessarily need to challenge the original or prove that it is better.

Sometimes it only needs to make you stop and listen to a song you thought you already knew.

That's what this performance did for me.

The words are still the same. The melody is still the same. But the feeling comes through a different person, and suddenly you notice things you may have missed before.

Maybe that's what makes a great cover worthwhile.
