I wonder when Pakistanis are going to be brave enough to partially credit "He Who Must Not Be Named" for the acceleration of Pakistan's nuclear weapons program.

I've been reading through the NSA declassified archives over the period and Zia ul Haq pretty much used every trick in the book to delay and obfuscate the Americans when they were pressuring him over Pakistan's nuclear weapons program from 1979 to 1988.

It's kind of shocking how well he was able to just deny it, pretend he had no knowledge of it or state that the intelligence was wrong, all while the evidence was mounting up. Didn't trigger the Pressler amendment either although it was only a matter of time before it did when the US's intelligence became more damning.

Expertly did this while also still extracting concessions from the US like the F-16 military package.

It's actually ironic how so many Pakistani leaders with different ideological persuasions (opposed to each other) were all of one mind when it came to the nuclear program and how each of them built on what their predecessors had done.

Pakistan could use that "Pakistan First" mentality in other realms like the economy. If Pakistanis can build a nuclear weapons program - imagine what more it could achieve if everyone was on board with one another.
