We are a halo project supporting our neighbourhood to live in a beautiful healthy place for people & nature round Birkenhead Point Le Roy's Bush Auckland.
Exciting new technologies for pest control presented by @abbie_reynolds at #pestival including some #PF2050 traps, photo monitoring and specific toxins. Future options for our rat halo work in Birkenhead.
Congratulations to @KaipatikiEnviro, Para Patrol, and Totara Heights Bush Guardians who were all winners in the Mayoral Conservation Awards #aklpestival#pestfreeakl
Great to get recognition from @AklCouncil@richardhills777 for all the work community groups contribute to protection of biodiversity values of Tāmaki Makaurau- we don’t do it for the prizes but it’s lovely to feel acknowledged #mayoralconservationawards
Preparing some display subjects for #wineandweeds. First time I have found Mexican Daisy in the forest near here - this is the sum total of it, removed immediately.
It’s our annual (the 8th time we have run it) wine & weeds celebration this weekend https://t.co/IdPSTQjY6q to inspire and support our neighbourhood weeding & restoration efforts. Birkenhead restoration folk - we’d love to catch up. Thanks @AklCouncil for ur support.
How many rats are in Birkenhead & are community pest control projects working? For 3 days these chew cards will sit in the forest & what eats them, & how much they eat them, will be compared to last year. This will enable the rat population to be monitored.
Lovely to connect with the @PFKaipatiki community today at the citizen science session. Thanks for organising & engaging us more deeply w the values that make the place we live amazing!
Keeping in touch w our community today at the summer street party. Five years ago we started this and now we’ve stepped back and Highbury House & the Hinemoa St business lead it.
@beyond_fence@AklCouncil You have all been doing an amazing job in our hood. We couldn’t tackle this issue without you. Not even scratch the surface to be honest. I’m glad my committee could support you and happy council has the funding to support such important initiatives.
Whoop whoop we’ve been granted $ from @AklCouncil to continue weeding in our halo round Le Roys Bush. We’ve transformed weedy sites to native bush & are motivated to get >residents bitten by the restoration bug. It’s fun! There’s cake! Thanks for your support @richardhills777
Talking about our cluster group weed model today showing what’s possible when neighbours work together and with support @AklCouncil for weeding in steep inaccessible areas. One group x council funding by 6 as their contribution.
Community #weedcontrol can be fun! This is the 6th wine and weeds - where we celebrate the weed control halo around Le Roys Bush. So rewarding to be part of this community & achieving great biodiversity results. Thanks @AklCouncil for your support.
Wine & weeds tomorrow - our annual social gathering to support community weed control. We’ll be sharing the frustration of controlling persistent weeds like Blue Morning Glory as well as success stories to motivate people just starting out. And there’s food & wine & great company
Kiekie is common in the bush that connects our community group it climbs up trees & scrambles through the wetland. It’s an important weaving plant too. It’s related to Pandanus from the Pacific, a plant used in Tonga to make a skirt called a kiekie.
This clip on our project demonstrates the kind of work we do around Le Roys every weekend on private land and in the Bush. Last year across 5 clusters we did almost 1000 hours of volunteer work.
In the area around Le Roy’s Bush in Northcote, one local community group has been restoring an inner-city native forest at the bottom of their gardens. Find out more on those environmental heroes: https://t.co/nEDwX9eD51
We have 5 clusters of neighbours...maybe soon 6 working round a remnant patch of forest only a stones throw from the centre of Auckland. https://t.co/JhRXYTrqkh we are getting to know each other, sharing ideas, recipes, enjoying coffee & cakes - & weeding!
We had a kaka in Le Roys Bush this weekend https://t.co/9XCdmeHtUg we assume it’s a visitor & hope one day they’ll stick around. If you want to join our private land rat control halo get in touch!
