Zohran Mamdani told Donald Trump to "turn the volume up" as he addressed his supporters during a victory speech after he won New York City's mayoral race, saying that the city that made the president is also the city that can show the country how to defeat him.
"We will refuse to allow those who traffic in division and hate to pit us against one another," Mamdani told supporters on Tuesday. "In this moment of darkness, New York will be the light. We believe in standing up for those we love, whether you are an immigrant, a member of the trans community, any Black women that Donald Trump has fired from a federal job."
Speaking directly to the president, Mamdani then said, "Donald Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up."
Mamdani, 34, who is a self-described democratic socialist, will be the city’s youngest mayor in over a century. He will also be New York City's first Muslim mayor and person of South Asian descent to hold the role. He defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
