Artscape - May 23-25

I’ve been back in Baltimore these past two weeks getting ready for a busy Artscape weekend. If you’re not familiar, Artscape is the city’s biggest arts festival—a collision of art, culture, and community that’s transformed Baltimore for over 40 years. This year, it’s moving into the heart of Downtown as part of Mayor Scott’s Downtown RISE Initiative, with a focus on creative placemaking and long-term community investment.

I’ve been going to Artscape for as long as I can remember, and this is the first time I’m participating in a real way. I’ll be contributing to the Urban Oasis Mural Project, painting one of the pillars under the Jones Falls Expressway, and I’ll also have a booth at the inaugural Scout Art Fair.

It feels meaningful to be part of something that’s been such a fixture in my life and in the city’s creative landscape. More details below.

The Morning Prayer is a powerful and noble evocation of the Muslim world's rites and religion. A man is absorbed in prayerful contemplation facing towards the Kaaba in Mecca.

Despite being one of the leading Orientalist artists, very little is known of Ludwig Deutsch’s life. He settled in Paris in 1878 and studied under painter Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921).

We got a long way to go, but it’s a start •
