Boudreau was just 24 years old when he made his way up the steps to the team offices above the ticket windows and main entrance to League Park in 1942. When he came down, he was player-manager of the Cleveland Indians. The press and fans dubbed him “boy manager”.

82 years ago today (July 15, 1944) at League Park, Steve Gromek threw all 14 innings as the Cleveland Indians beat the St.Louis Browns 3-2. Gromek also hit a game-winning, walkoff, RBI single in the bottom of the 14th!

146 years ago today (July 10, 1880), still more than a decade before League Park, the Cleveland Blues beat the Chicago White Stockings 2-0 at Kennard Street Park, snapping their 21-game win streak. 1st place Chicago still led 2nd place Cleveland by 13 games in the NL standings.

113 years ago today (July 10, 1913) at League Park, Cy Falkenberg throws a complete game, as the second-place Cleveland Naps beat the first-place Philadelphia Athletics 4-1. The A’s get their only run in the 9th inning and were held to 7 base hits.

131 years ago today (July 9, 1895) at League Park, a Jesse Burkett double and a Jimmy McAleer triple key a 9-3 win for Cleveland over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Spiders pull to within a game of first place in a crazy-close National League pennant race.

The Tribe also won the nightcap of that Saturday doubleheader 8-5, and then walloped Boston again on Sunday, 15-10. (That’s 50 runs in three games!) By the way, 27 is still the 7th-most runs scored in a game, with the record now belonging to Texas, 30-3 over Baltimore in 2007.

105 years ago today (June 28, 1921) at League Park, Elmer Smith hit a single, double and a triple for 5 RBIs, as the Cleveland Indians beat the St. Louis Browns 12-4. St. Louis actually outhit Cleveland 17-16, and Stan Coveleski still threw a complete game for the Tribe.

105 years ago today (June 26, 1921) at League Park, pitcher Jim Bagby led Cleveland to a 15-1 rout of the St. Louis Browns. He threw a complete game 5-hitter and also smacked a pair of doubles, registering 4 RBIs. The Indians scored 8 runs in the 4th inning.

90 years ago today (May 27, 1936) at League Park, Cleveland catcher Billy Sullivan had 5 of the Indians’ 21 total base hits in a 12-2 win over the St. Louis Browns.

Today (May 26) in 1930 at League Park, Pat Caraway of the White Sox strikes out Cleveland’s Joe Sewell twice in the second game of a doubleheader. Sewell would strike out just one more time that entire season, in 414 plate appearances. The Indians won the game 5-2.
