Thought Lacroix was excellent. Really good at proactively defending space behind the line and stepping out to kill danger, both from the mid block and when dropping into a low block. His timing and ability to sweep across and snuff out transitions were particularly impressive, and he handled Garcia’s movements really well throughout.

Also had a few moments where he was really vocal in organising the back line, which is a nice positive.

Alonso's game model built around positional references rather than fixed roles; width, HS occupation + central presence maintained despite rotations across & btwn the front 5 (3-4-2-1).

Rogers' profile particularly interesting in this context. Capable of occupying multiple zones, receiving in HSs, connecting centrally, rotating wider and attacking depth.

Carrier + combinative profile + space attacker within a fluid but structurally stable framework.

Biggest worry coming into this season is the dynamics between that front three and the lack of intent from any of them to consistently offer last line presence and attack depth. Palestra being injured is a bummer too, given he’s one of the main players in this system who looks capable of providing some sort of sustainable off-ball presence.

Big onus on the wb’s today to attack depth + I pray there’s some sort of cohesion between the front three in terms of who comes short and who runs in behind, and that we actually get some counter movements going. Would make such a difference to how fluid the attack feels.

Surely he’s come up in discussions during the Enzo deal. Seems like we have the leverage here and could probably compromise on getting Nico G on favourable terms. Would be a pretty good deal overall given we’d be bringing in a profile of need while also getting some good money in.

Wouldn’t say it’s necessarily “the obsession with positional play”, but rather Maresca’s interpretation of it, particularly the heavy emphasis on maintaining the system at the expense of platforming your players within it. I.e. your fb’s being closer to goal than your wingers or more threatening attacking players. Cherki coming on and playing inside is a good example of it, as it just opens up so much more from an attacking POV when you’re actually getting your more threatening players into those central areas.

My overall feel is that the issue isn’t positional play itself, it’s when the positions become more important than the players occupying them.

Such a valuable profile, esp with the way teams are defending OOP now. M2M, locking one side, using pressing triggers, etc. Makes technical security and the ability to offer different solutions under pressure and break oppo pressing schemes so valuable.

Sequence below shows why Acheampong is just an insane technician in build-up and can offer such a wide range of solutions, both from a passing (and carrying) standpoint. Something we’ve seen before, but for a guy his height, his fluidity and mechanics are really good. That makes him incredibly press-resistant and gives him so much variety in how he can solve situations in tight areas.
