There’s a lot to unpack from the election, including the somewhat bizarre fact that across the globe incumbent parties that brought their countries through Covid are now losing elections in part - and I emphasize only in part - because of those Covid disruptions. Folks need to remember that the Biden/Harris administration did more for the working folks and the middle class in the USA than any administration in modern history. Yeah, we may have lost the cultures wars but because of the Inflation Reduction Act, the infrastructure bill, CHIPS and other economic measures, we have the strongest economy in world. Period. Remember that when others start to take credit for it come January.

No one can replace the lives lost in weather related disasters and our hearts go out to all of those who suffered in the wake of Hurricane Helene. But we can be smart. We can prepare. We can mitigate. We can rebuild. But that takes resources that only the federal government can provide. Resources to provide advance warnings of potential dangers. Resources to provide resources to prepare and to rebuild. No one sees those at risk in this election, but make no mistake - they are.

The playbook for a Trump/Vance Administration is Project 2025, the blueprint by the Heritage Foundation authored by Trump/Vance buddies. This playbook calls for the dismantling of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), whose duties include Hurricane Warnings, and scattering its functions among other agencies or privatizing them (another way for Trump’s buddies to make money) or sending them to the states. The rational is this bizarre claim that NOAA is a driver of “climate change alarm industry” and thus “harmful to future U.S. prosperity.” Absurd.

In addition, Project 2025 would slash FEMA’s budget and return disaster responses to state and local governments. Take a good look at Helene’s devastation across FL, GA, NC and TN and name one state that could absorb that rebuild. The TN Governor’s calls for “prayer and fasting” instead of a timely emergency declaration did not help his state very much.

It is often the overlooked and taken for granted that is at stake in elections. But folks, we can’t afford to overlook anything this time. We can’t take anything for granted.
