“No bail, go to jail” — R Ashoka slams Karnataka Hate Speech Bill

Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka strongly criticised the Congress government after the Karnataka Assembly passed the Hate Speech and Hate Crime Bill. Calling it a “No bail, go to jail law,” Ashoka alleged that the legislation is designed to silence the Opposition and intimidate anyone who questions the government. He warned that under the guise of maintaining social harmony, the law could be misused for political vendetta and curb freedom of speech.

The government, however, defended the Bill, stating it is essential to prevent hate politics and protect social unity. As per the punishment provisions, hate speech based on religion, caste, language, race, gender or social identity can attract up to 3 years of imprisonment or a fine of ₹50,000, or both. In cases of hate crime involving violence or serious harm, the punishment can extend to 5 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to ₹1 lakh. Repeat offences invite harsher penalties.

#Heartbreaking incident in Bengaluru has left many shaken and questioning humanity. Thirty-four-year-old Venkataramanan suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while riding a bike with his wife. Near Kadrihalli Bridge, he collapsed on the road, gasping for life. His wife screamed for help, folded her hands, and begged passersby to save her husband.

She tried stopping vehicles, cried uncontrollably, and held his head in her lap, pleading with him not to leave her. Yet, no one stopped. Vehicles moved on, people watched in silence, and precious minutes slipped away.

Those terrifying moments became his final moments. This was not just a medical emergency, but a mirror held up to society’s growing indifference. The wife’s helpless plea painfully reminded us that when compassion disappears from our streets, humanity itself is in danger.
