Nirmala Sitharaman’s entire defence is basically:

“Customers will not pay. Merchants will.”

Madam Finance Minister, merchants don’t run charities.

If you force a merchant to pay 12 extra on a 3,000 UPI transaction, he’ll recover that 12 from somewhere.

He’ll increase the product price, reduce discounts or add it to the bill.

The cost doesn’t disappear because the Finance Ministry says “merchant will pay.”

This is basic economics.

How can the people writing financial policy not understand something every small shopkeeper already knows?

Dear @NHAI_Official Team,

I wanted to share a concern that I frequently notice while travelling through this toll plaza.

Whenever I pass through here, I notice that several toll booths remain closed, while only 3-4 booths are operational.

If this is the case, then what is the benefit of having such a wide toll plaza with multiple lanes when commuters still have to wait unnecessarily?

Please ensure that the maximum possible number of toll booths remain operational so that the waiting time at toll plazas can be kept to a minimum.

This is not just an issue at this particular toll plaza; a similar situation can be observed at several other toll plazas as well.

Kindly look into this and ensure better lane availability for commuters. 🙏

Yesterday, we were stuck in a toll queue at Meerut’s Siwaya Toll Plaza for just 15 minutes,

but my friend got so frustrated that he questioned the toll operator directly.

He said

"Man, the queue is this long, should not the toll be made free ? At least the traffic would keep moving."

Then he asked the toll employee

"When the queue gets this long and traffic starts piling up,
why is not the toll made free to clear the congestion ?"

The employee’s response left my friend even more surprised

"It does not become toll free just like that, think about how much loss the owner would have to bear."

Then he casually added

"Just stand in the queue. Your turn will come."

We ended up waiting there for around 15 minutes.

But those 15 minutes did not just cost us time.

The car was not moving, but the fuel was still being burned.

So basically, we were standing in line to pay the toll,

while simultaneously spending money on fuel and losing valuable time.

That’s when my friend made a simple point

"If collecting the toll is necessary, does the time and fuel wasted by people stuck in the toll queue not matter ?"

And this is not just about our 15 minutes.

If thousands of vehicles spend 10-20 minutes every day waiting at toll plazas, think about the bigger impact.

hours of lost time, extra fuel consumption and unnecessary pollution.

Charging a toll is not necessarily wrong.

But efficient traffic management should be just as important as toll collection.

Because here’s the real question

There’s a calculation for the toll company’s revenue

but who accounts for the time and fuel the public loses waiting in a toll queue ?
