@samhaselby Microhistory is illustrative and an excellent pedagogical tool, but I doubt you can shed light on under-researched periods by microhistory alone. There is a reason why our paradigm microhistory is about an exceptionally well-researched period like the Renaissance.
@theodorebeers On my way to Berlin to see if it still feels as good as it did 10 years ago. I am no expert on expat life in Germany, but I don’t think outsiders appreciate the next level scamminess of living in the US. Costco and Trader Joe’s have a cult following because they don’t scam.
@DavidAstinWalsh@jgo34 Yes. And that is expensive research no one would patronize. I am not even sure who would participate. Furthermore, the job itself, even in good circumstances like mine, is no longer a guarantee of class mobility.
@DavidAstinWalsh@jgo34 …some activist scholarship is a silent call for individual patronage from powers that be. Much of it, though, is just trying to finding a collective way forward.
@DavidAstinWalsh@jgo34 … we are looking at working class people who want a socio-economic way out of this with the tools they have. The alternative to activist scholarship is basically individual ways out. That involves aligning yourself to one locus of power or another…
@sariyannis@EvrimBinbas I think Gutas, through whom many of us think about Rosenthal, is somewhat different from Rosenthal’s other students, eg Abraham Udovitch.
@AdamSabra14@TheoKnights It largely comes down to the question of decline, whether it is just a discursive trope taken from Ibn Khaldun or a frank observation, whatever that may be.
@alimarli_ Aynen.
