ANAVIL BRAHMINS OF GUJARAT:
In the 10th century, Yajurvedi Brahmins came from Kanoj to Gujarat. A group of them settled in the village of Anaval near Surat. They are known as Anavil. Anavil Brahmins spread from Anaval to other places of Surat, Valasad & Navsari districts. They are agriculturist & farmers.
Anavil Brahmins are not Karmakandi-performing religious rituals. Their rituals are done by Audich/Modh Brahmins. They are not Bhikshuk. Anavil Brahmins are known as Desai, Bhathela & Mastan. Desai were leaseholders of land revenue collection, Zamindar/Jagirdar in the Maratha time.
Desai word's origin is in Sanskrit. It means the owner of the gift/receiver of revenue of land given by the ruler for services rendered by him to the state. During British rule, Anavil Brahmins adopted modern education & became lawyers and government servants such as teachers, Talati, clerks & officers.
Freedom fighter, writer & Gandhiji's personal secretary Mahadevbhai Desai, freedom fighter & ex-Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Morarji Ranchhodji Desai and famous lawyer of Mumbai Bhulabhai Desai were Anavil Brahmin.
