Sports in Kansas 2025 1A-I Boys 🏀 Player of the Year: Brecken McGuire of Olpe.

The 6-foot-1 sophomore led the Eagles to the 2025 1A-I state title under head coach Chris Schmidt. McGuire averaged 17.5 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 3 apg, 3.4 spg and has already totaled 852 points in just two seasons as the most complete player in 1A-I. “As a team we improved in every category throughout the year especially on the defensive end. We set a goal to get back to the state tournament and come out on top. It was the best feeling winning a state championship with the best teammates & friends I could ask for.” McGuire told Chet Kuplen of Sports in Kansas earlier this week. He’s also on the MoKan Elite 16U team, a very highly regarded travel team and carries a 4.0 GPA. McGuire also told us his parents, Dustin and Megan, are his role models and always pushing him to be a better teammate and player. His mom has been doing basketball workouts with him since he was able to dribble. Look for a bright future for the rising star of Olpe, Kansas (population 518) in Lyon County. #sportsinkansas

Sports in Kansas 2025 1A-I Boys 🏀 Coach of the Year: Chris Schmidt of Olpe.

Schmidt led the Eagles to their third state title since 2021 as they defeated South Central, 47-34, for the 1A-I crown to finish 24-2 on the year. Schmidt also has three state titles as the schools football coach. Led by sophomore Brecken McGuire, the Eagles will have a bright future but do graduate 1A-I all state caliber Dexton Hoelting. Schmidt is 524-148 in 28 years with the program. He lists Mike Hevel as one of his mentors in coaching. Schmidt is an alum of Olpe High School and Emporia State University. “This group of young man came to work every day with the notion of making everyone better each and every day and reaching the ultimate team goal!” Schmidt told Chet Kuplen of Sports in Kansas earlier this week. #sportsinkansas

Olpe wins their third state basketball title since 2021 under head coach Chris Schmidt as they defeat South Central, 47-34. Schmidt is becoming a Kansas coaching legend before our eyes. He has three state basketball titles and three state football titles for six total state titles in the two sports with the majority of them coming recently in addition to the 2014 2-1A state football title. Great sports community in our state. #sportsinkansas

The Olpe Eagles (1A-D1) won the Canton-Galva substate. They beat Central Burden in the championship game 64-33. The Eagles, under head coach Chris Schmidt, finished 3rd last year and won back to back state championships in 2021 & 2022. They have a 21-2 record on the year. #sportsinkansas
