If personal improvement rather than persistent need is what we think Christianity is all about, then we will develop a façade of goodness to cope with the discrepancy between our insides and our outsides.
Pastor, tomorrow your church doesn’t need social commentary, legal analysis, fear mongering, political platforming, 7 steps to a better anything, or an emotional experience. They need what you need.
They need to see Jesus in Word, prayer, and sacrament.
Pray for you pastors. Cut them some slack. Don’t weaponize your disappointments or spiritualize your preferences. Work hard to give them cause to rejoice when they see you, not groan. Have their back.
If sin can destroy:
- Samson, the strongest.
- Solomon, the wisest.
- Judas, a disciple.
- David, a man after God’s own heart.
It will try to outsmart, overpower, and overcome you as well.
Keep your guard up. Fix your eyes on Jesus. (Hebrews 12:2)
