The Mamelodi Ten were ten young teenage student activists from Mamelodi who were abducted and killed on June 26 1986, in a planned joint operation by the Northern Transvaal Security Police and the South African Defence Force's Special Forces. The ten students were persuaded by Joe Mamasela, posing as an MK operative, to leave the country for military training. However, they were taken to an area near Nietverdient where they were reportedly injected with chemicals to make them sleep and then placed into a kombi set alight. Lihle Asemahle Kahla, a 23-year-old woman from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, has been missing since 21 September 2025. She disappeared around 19:00 near the Ntwentweni Golf Course in Port Shepstone, and her phone was switched off at 22:00 that night.

Despite a case being opened with the SAPS Port Shepstone, her family says there has been little progress after more than a month. Lihle was last seen wearing a navy t-shirt with white stripes and red shorts. Her loved ones have conducted searches in Shepstone, Ntwentweni, and surrounding areas, and have put up posters in both Port Shepstone and Durban.

Vincent Toivo Tshabalala (1964-1985) was a determined combatant who fought the apartheid regime and sacrificed his life for freedom. He was born on 15 August 1964 in Bethal, Mpumalanga. He was an extraordinary young man who at the tender age of 13 understood the hardships of black South Africans, and decided to join the struggle after being inspired by the Bethal Trial in 1977. He joined the ANC underground and left for exile in 1983 where he joined Umkhonto we Sizwe in 1983. He returned to South Africa in 1984. I told them I did nothing. They said they would hit me until I told the truth. They started to hit me with pipes and with fists. They kicked me with their big boots. They kicked me all over. They only stopped when my tooth came out. I was bleeding a lot and was very sore. They said Imust make a statement. I was afraid. I wrote down what they wanted me to write. Jessica Nobangaye and her friend, Mbali Sihlaba’s lifeless bodies were found at the Klipspruit West Cemetery on 17 September 2025.

The two women were last seen leaving their homes on 9 September but never returned. Jessica’s showing signs of brutal assault with broken limbs before being set alight, while Mbali had sustained a gunshot wound before also being burned. It has been alleged that they may have been raped before their deaths.

To this day, no proper investigation has been conducted, and no arrests have been made. Jessica leaves behind her 3-year-old child, while Mbali was the mother of a 6-year-old.
