Story time:

A few hours ago, my girlfriend (Yahav) and I had dinner with my mom and @EliBeerUH, the founder of @UnitedHatzalah. He gave us a recap of their lifesaving work over the course of 2023, we shared stories from the last few months, and at the end of the dinner as Yahav and I were leaving, Eli encouraged us to do the training course that all of the Hatzalah volunteers do to prepare them to save lives and treat medical emergencies.

Fast forward 20 minutes, Yahav and I are in the car on the way home and we approach an intersection fairly close to my apartment. On the other side of the intersection, we see what looks like someone lying in the middle of the road and the only thing we can really see is a small red light that looked like a brake light from a bike/e-scooter (it was around 10:30 PM and it was quite dark).

As we got closer, we realized it was a person who had seemingly just got in some sort of crash on his bike. There was no other car, bike, or person around at the moment. We immediately pulled aside and ran over to check what happened and to see if he was okay. At that point, two other people had noticed and rushed over as well. We noticed that he had no pulse and was not breathing.

My first reaction was - call United Hatzalah. But one problem, I didn’t remember their emergency phone number. So I immediately called Eli, asked him for the phone number, and by the time I got off the phone with him and managed to dial their number, one of their ambulances had already pulled up to the scene. Less than 60 seconds after we noticed this person lying on the ground, pulled over, ran over to him, and made one phone call (and on my way to make a second one), they had already arrived.

For those wondering what happened to the guy who crashed, the Hatzalah volunteers started CPR and brought back both his breath and pulse before taking him to the hospital (I pray that he is okay and will have a full recovery).

I had an immense amount of appreciation for @UnitedHatzalah and @EliBeerUH before this evening, but after witnessing their amazing work firsthand, that level of appreciation has more than doubled.

Yahav and I are 100% doing this course, and I encourage others to do it too. And for those who need it (but let’s hope no one ever does):
