🧐 What happens when we leave our bodies?
🎬 In episode 9, “Out-of-Body Experiences”, of “Beyond the Brain”, we explore the accounts of those who have felt themselves floating above their bodies, observing their own reality from the outside.
🧠 Chris French, Director of the “Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit” at @GoldsmithsUoL, offers us a critical and fascinating insight into how science deals with these phenomena. If science is pushing its boundaries to understand what once seemed inexplicable, the question remains: has everything really been clarified?

🧠 The research work “Locus coeruleus integrityas an early imaging marker of susceptibility to Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body pathology” focuses on the development of early imaging markers for neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Alzheimer’s disease and Lewybody pathology.
Considering an ageing population and an expected risein the prevalence of dementia, this approach could help identify signs of susceptibility before more late-onset and less specific brain changes, suchas atrophy, thereby improving early diagnosis, risk stratification and our understanding of the progression of these conditions.

Dreams are both universal and personal experiences ✨
To further address the extent to which stable individual traits and shared experiences over time shape dream content, a team of researchers coordinated by Giulio Bernardi (IMT Scuola IMT Alti Studi Lucca, Italy), with the support of the #BialFoundation, conducted a study, over four years, analysing thousands of reports of dreams and waking experiences.

🧡 The project “Myocardial Inflammation: The Counterpoint of Intensity and Time” proposes a new way of understanding inflammation in the heart, focusing on two key aspects: the intensity of the inflammatory response and its duration overtime.
The research will integrate clinical and experimental models, molecular analysis and advanced cardiac magnetic resonance imaging techniques to better characterise different patterns of myocardial inflammation. The aim isto create a more precise basis for distinguishing disease phenotypes, improving risk stratification and supporting more targeted therapeutic decisions.

🔬 The project “GUT JOINT AXIS STUDY - Gut glycome andintestinal permeability as drivers of the gut-joint axis: impact in the interplay between inflammatory bowel disease and spondyloarthritis” aims to investigate the relationship between the gut and joint inflammation in patients with spondyloarthritis, a group of chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases frequently associated with extra-articular manifestations, notably inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
The aim isto explore new pathophysiological mechanisms, identify biomarkers of disease severity and therapeutic response, thereby contributing to more innovative and personalised treatment strategies for patients with spondyloarthritis.
