In the men's 100m freestyle final of the Paris Olympics, Chinese swimmer Pan Zhanle broke the world record and won the championship with a significant lead of one body length, clocking in at 46.40 seconds.
However, Brett Hawke, the coach of Australian swimming star Kyle Chalmers, lost his composure after the race and posted a video questioning Pan's achievement. He expressed his anger towards the swimming event, stating that he has been studying competitive swimming for three decades and "it is impossible for humans to win by a body length in this event." He further claimed, "If it looks too good to be true, it probably is."
Following the video's release, netizens in the comments section retaliated, accusing Hawke of "mere jealousy" and suggesting, "If Pan was an American athlete, your comments would be entirely different. You would be praising how remarkable he is."
During the post-victory press conference, Pan Zhanle addressed the issue of doping tests, stating that they had no impact on his performance. "Last year, I underwent 29 tests, none of which came back positive. From May to July this year, during our national championships, I had another 21 tests, and all were negative."
He also elaborated on how he managed to repeatedly shatter the world record in this event. "I've been using this tactic since the Hangzhou Asian Games, where I push hard at the start and hold on in the latter stages... Our daily training focuses more on aerobic exercises than speed training, as I rely on my endurance in the latter half. We also have a dedicated research team analyzing every frame of our underwater techniques."
Chinese swimmer Zhang Yufei, who won a bronze medal in the 200m butterfly event, firmly defended Pan Zhanle's achievement, emphasizing that it was achieved under constant doping tests. "Before the Paris Olympics, Pan and our other teammates underwent numerous doping tests without interruption, including throughout the week leading up to the Village entry. I'm not sure of the exact number, but I know he hasn't missed a single test during that period." She added, "Why do Chinese athletes face scrutiny when they swim fast? Why weren't people questioning Michael Phelps when he won seven or eight gold medals? Or Katie Ledecky, who has dominated long-distance swimming from 2012 to 2024, winning gold medals at every Olympics? No one questioned her achievements."

Neighbours are screaming at the police, police are saying there’s a woman injured around the corner and we don’t know the full story. That doesn’t exactly make sense given that initially they were saying we need to assess you and assess the dogs for injuries
