please know the original tweet is a quick thing i wrote on the clock. it is not every reason why sexuality being defined as an act OR conversion therapy is wrong. thank you
being told this pov is outdated when “sexuality = action” is older is frying me. i also was told this is a concession to straight people. sexuality being defined as an action stops people from realizing they’re queer bc they see themselves as straights who did a momentary gay act
what’s wild about this is our queer elders fought so hard for queerness to be an identity NOT an action bc if it’s what you do, you can stop doing it > if you can’t stop doing it, it’s a compulsion > a compulsion is a mental illness & is therefore treatable > conversion therapy
@flipssakemate i’ve seen people talk about this before! ngl i don’t quite get it tho. i’m not familiar enough with this concept to offer any meaningful contribution to the discussion, but i love that people are thinking and expanding on what it means to be queer

killing me with all these people saying bisexuals are functionally less queer when they aren’t in a same sex relationship. does this imply that lesbians and gay men are also functionally less queer if they are single because they aren’t in a same sex relationship either
@thermalsweaters people who experience attraction regardless of gender exist everywhere, in every culture & society, at every point in history. my internal orientation is what it would be regardless of the context it exists in
@thermalsweaters and why is conversion therapy torture? because it’s a) forcing people to go against their nature b) through barbaric means. sexuality as one’s nature directly contrasts the idea that it’s an action — it is the self. also how we define & categorize sexuality is social & cultural.—

@seraphisonfire how? the idea that bisexuals can just choose to stop liking a gender means our sexuality is able to be changed. also i don’t think that either. stating the importance of sexuality not being a action doesn’t mean that if it was a action, queerness would be wrong
@nopuriia@seraphisonfire i’ve seen that conversation floating around this is not what i was referring to in my tweets. understandable that you linked the two though given the insane things people have been saying about bisexuals lately.
@seraphisonfire i’ve seen this but i don’t agree with all of it. she discusses how the ethnic model of queer activism (born gay) further marginalizes bisexuals, who can choose. but i can only choose what gender to DATE. i cannot choose to stop liking women. that idea promotes conversion therapy
@seraphisonfire@nopuriia there’s also more reasons i gave in my conversation with you, such as being closeted or queerness being illegal in certain countries. it’s bean soup because you cannot assume one reason in a tweet with limited characters is the entirety of an argument.
@seraphisonfire more like violent coercion is such an obvious case of sexuality not being an action that this argument falls apart completely with even a little thought given to it. it doesn’t hold up to scrutiny if you have to ignore major logical inconsistencies to have a point.
@seraphisonfire how about you explain how queerness is an action in countries where people are closeted in soulless heterosexual marriages because queerness is punishable by imprisonment or death? are they straight because of what they’re doing or queer because of their sexual orientation?
@swageshia sexual orientation as an action isn’t how sexuality works either, especially in a world where most queer people are closeted. there’s far too many examples to even list here. it shouldn’t be demonized as an action either, but attraction simply is what one feels, not what one does
advocating for queerness as an action to shit on bisexuals sets us all back! it’s not what you do at all, it is fundamentally who you are. i am queer, i cannot be less of myself. biphobes are willing to burn their own hand just to hate on another bitch. embarrassing.
