The issue is not that conservatives are outpaced by progress, as reluctant liberals driving the speed limit, but that, without any genuinely revolutionary class to oppose, conservatives are left swinging at windmills.

What can conservatives oppose at this point? Gravity, entropy, commercial nihilism, popular secularism; these things of scale are too big to resist. Perhaps this is why conservatives distract themselves with little wars today.
