It is easy to look at a moment like that and assume it says something about humanity, but the more I thought about it, the more complicated it felt.

Owning a dog comes with responsibility. Once you decide to keep an animal, feeding and caring for it is no longer optional. It becomes a duty you accepted the moment you brought the dog home. Fulfilling that obligation is not the same thing as choosing who deserves help and who does not.

There is also the reality that in a city like Lagos, the need around you is endless. On some streets you can meet ten people asking for help within a few minutes. No single person can respond to every request. Many people have given before, again and again, until they reach a point where they have to start setting limits.

Experience also changes how people respond. Some people have been scammed, manipulated, or pressured before. After that, generosity becomes more cautious. It is not always a loss of compassion. Sometimes it is simply a lesson learned.
There is also another side people rarely see. Some prefer to help in quieter ways. They support relatives, contribute to community causes, or donate to organized charities instead of giving money on the street. From the outside it might look like indifference, but the full story is rarely visible in a single moment.

Modern life constantly puts suffering in front of us. If we reacted emotionally to every single case we encountered, it would quickly become overwhelming. So people start managing their boundaries. They decide where their responsibility begins and where it ends.

Maybe what you witnessed was not someone becoming less human. Maybe it was just someone navigating responsibility, experience, and the uncomfortable truth that there are far more people in need than any one person can help.

6. From personal experience, the worst set of people to deal with are overly religious people. It is as if the more religious a person is, the more wicked they become.

7. Just like tribe, religion has brought more division than unity among people, especially here in Nigeria. Even among Christians, members of a particular church like Jehovah’s Witnesses will refuse to marry you or even be friends with you because, to them, you are a “worldly” person.

8. Religion makes people docile. For you to be a great believer, you must drop your sense of reasoning. It discourages people from asking rational questions because they do not want to offend God.

9. Most religious people, especially Christians, love, adore, and worship their pastors without even realizing it. They idolize men of God, sometimes even above God Himself.

10. Religion is one of the easiest ways to extort money from people or mislead them. Once you say “God said,” people take the words as final without doubt.

11. There is little difference between the prosperity gospel and capitalism. In fact, many churches are purely businesses. They operate like corporate entities, and when the General Overseer dies, his child takes over.

12. Homosexuality is more common among pastors and church brothers than people admit.

13. What most pastors refer to as communication from God is just intuition. They did not hear anything from God.

We women live a terrifying double life. A mother will look at her teenage son with absolute, boundless empathy. She will hold him when he cries, tell him his feelings matter, and pray to God that he finds a woman who loves him for his pure heart, not his wallet.
