Our thanks to those who contacted us today concerned with a cygnet at Mexborough. The bird was reported to be towing line and a float, which our rescuer was able to safely remove before returning the youngster back to her grateful parents.
Our thanks to those who reported that a swan and a cygnet were found caught in the same stretch of fishing line with a float attached, earlier today at Nunroyd. The fishing tackle was safely removed by our rescuer, and the birds immediately returned to the water without injury.
Dan and Phil attended and launched our smaller rescue dinghy so the bird could be safely reached. After carefully cutting away the huge lengths of line caught around branches and vegetation, the cygnet was freed and successfully brought ashore.
Earlier this week, we were called to Pontefract Park after reports of a distressed cygnet found to be trapped by one leg in fishing line, near one of the lake’s islands.
Another new arrival, a crash landed swan reported to us on a busy road. Now comfortable in one of our care pens, with the complimentary all day buffet. We expect a full recovery for this bird over the coming days.
A late call to York on Sunday evening, for a distressed swan reported to be carrying a hook through his upper beak and trailing line, with a reluctance to eat. The swan was secured on first attempt, the fishing tackle safely removed, and returned to his awaiting mate.
The first cygnets of 2026 recently arrived in our care with their mother, who required treatment. Sadly, the cob died before they hatched, leaving the family vulnerable. We’re pleased to report that all are doing well. Thanks to local residents to local Police for their support.
Another recent call out for our rescuers, on this occasion the swan was reported to our helpline to be carrying a fishing lure, with a triple barbed hook attached. Our thanks to those who kindly reported the bird and requested our assistance.

Perseverance paid off at the Chesterfield Canal. Four cygnets were swept through a lock spillway, leaving their parents with just one. After a late-night search and an early return, they were rescued with help from passing boaters and safely reunited with mum and dad.
Thankfully, our rescuer was able to secure the swan on first attempt and managed to safely remove the fishing tackle. Fortunately, the bird had suffered no lasting injury, and was promptly reunited with her mate and cygnets.
Our sincere thanks to all concerned.
Despite determined efforts by other organisations to help, previous rescue attempts had unfortunately been unsuccessful and the situation sounded as though it was becoming increasingly urgent, so we were happy to try and provide assistance.
We attended a swan on the Ashton Canal in Manchester, after reports that she was carrying fishing tackle. The bird - one of a breeding pair with newly hatched cygnets - had reportedly been observed for a number days with a fishing hook embedded through her beak.
We were called to the University of York earlier today, following reports of an injured swan (pictured). Unfortunately, the bird could not be located when our rescuer arrived. If you spot the swan anywhere on campus, please get in touch with us.
We recently came to the aid of this swan in Leeds after reports that the animal was trailing a large amount of fishing line with a ‘bait bomb’ attached. The bird was safely rescued and the tackle carefully removed, before release shortly afterwards.
Our volunteer rescuers in Sheffield were recently able to help a nesting female swan, found to be carrying fishing tackle in the web of a foot. Thankfully, the hook was safely removed, and the bird could be immediately released back to her cygnets.

We still urgently need further safety equipment to fully prepare the boat for animal rescues. If anyone can help further, we’d be incredibly grateful - https://t.co/J9IFyNbhku
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who supported our rescue boat fundraiser 🙏
Thanks to your kindness, we’ve been able to purchase not only replacement outboards, but also a new rescue boat, trailer & accessories too.
Recovering in one of our intensive care incubators is this female Blackcap, found stunned in the middle of a road having collided with a vehicle. She is already a lot brighter compared to when she first arrived, and we are hopeful of a full recovery.
