Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women Studies hosts Interactive Session on “Building Solidarities, Empowering Women” with Prof. Diana Fox The Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women’s Studies at Jamia Millia Islamia organized a special interactive session titled “Building Solidarities, Empowering Women” on Monday, March 9, 2026, as part of its celebrations of International Women’s Day. The event was held at the SNCWS Library, Jamia Millia Islamia, and brought together students, scholars, and faculty members for an engaging academic dialogue on feminist solidarities and transnational activism. The session featured Diana J. Fox, Chairperson of Anthropology and Editor of the Journal of International Women’s Studies at Bridgewater State University, as the distinguished speaker. A cultural and applied anthropologist, scholar-activist, and documentary filmmaker, Prof. Fox’s research focuses on the Anglophone Caribbean, particularly Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, and addresses themes of gender and sexual diversity, women’s social movement activism, ecological sustainability, and transnational feminisms. Prof. Nishat Zaidi, Honorary Director of SNCWS, formally introduced the speaker and outlined Prof. Fox’s significant contributions to scholarship and activism related to women’s human rights, environmental justice, and transnational feminist movements. She emphasized the importance of interactive academic spaces that allow scholars and students to engage critically with contemporary gender issues. In her address, Prof. Fox reflected on her training as an anthropologist and discussed the multiple dimensions of knowledge production within feminist and community-based research. Drawing upon her extensive fieldwork and collaborations with marginalized communities, including her role as academic advisor to the United Maroon Indigenous People, she highlighted the significance of building meaningful partnerships with communities in the pursuit of social justice and empowerment. The session encouraged an open and engaging dialogue, with participants raising questions on feminist solidarities, community activism, and the role of scholarship in addressing global inequalities. Prof. Fox responded to the questions with insightful reflections drawn from her academic and activist experiences, making the session intellectually stimulating and interactive. The event concluded with a lively discussion, reaffirming the commitment of SNCWS to creating spaces for critical engagement, dialogue, and collaboration on issues concerning gender justice and social transformation and formal vote of thanks. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Amina Hussain, SNCWS.
