@LewistheLight1 It's all subjective, so you're not wrong. But in my opinion, his highs were so high, a mediocre album is, by comparison a miss.
If I released the same record, it would be considered a high for me. :)
@LewistheLight1 Compared to his best (Blood on the Tracks, Highway 61, etc.), Down in the Groove and Dylan and the Dead, can safely be considered misses. The Velvet Underground didn't have a bad album (unless we're counting 'Squeeze', but Lou, John , Sterling and Mo were long gone by then).
@RummysCorner Prime for prime:
JL = approx 6ft 1, 200lb.
EH = approx 6ft 2, 220lb
Modern conditioning of holyfield plus his chin would give him a good chance. He's the bigger man too.
Louis was a legend, but got knocked out by 190lb max schmeling. 220lb Holyfield could do more damage.
@looby60@Top10Nathan Fascinated by the S2S sessions. By his own account, he was blitzed and couldn't remember. Vocal chords are temperamental at the best of times, need certain conditions to perform well. He wasn't sleeping, chain smoking and doing tons of merck cocaine, but he never sounded better.
@SalvadorDafti@batcountry1980@Top10Nathan I hear you, but I suppose Woody was only there from 70-73. TV was in and out from 69 until 2016.
It started as a TMWSTW project (as that was the only album they actually played on together), after they'd done that, it looks like it evolved into a general DB tribute.
@SalvadorDafti@batcountry1980@Top10Nathan Oh, the one I saw, he was advertising 'The Man who sold the world' album and they did play all of it. Then they wheeled out Marc Almond for a bit of Bowie Kareoke, but before that, it was ace. Sorry you didn't have a good time.
@batcountry1980@Top10Nathan@SalvadorDafti I've seen woody and Tony's holy, holy. They do a good show. In their defense, Young Americans relies a lot on huge harmony backing vocals. Even the real Bowie stage shows often struggled to do it justice live.
@kennylanglea People say this was his worst album, but I disagree. Never Let Me Down was worse. It had nothing quite as bad as โGod Only Knowsโ, but also nothing anywhere nearly as good as โBlue Jeanโ or โLoving the Alienโ.
@kennylanglea@21stCscribe Regardless of what middle class rock critics or angry punks thought of them, nearly all of those albums are brilliant pieces of work.
@batcountry1980@SalvadorDafti@ChrisEvans86267 Me too. I think it's better. Most of the VU cast offs on the solo album didn't work as well with the session (YES) band, but 'I Can't Stand It' really works. It's the backing vocals and the guitar sound that do it for me.
Iโm just finishing up a solo album. In this age of AI-generated music, I think those of us who are able should aim to keep making flawed, human music for as long as we can.
Years ago, using a MIDI drum kit to trigger samples, a Kemper to produce amp tones, or even a MIDI keyboard to trigger a piano would have been considered sacrilegious.
These days, picking up an instrument and pointing a microphone at it makes you feel like Michelangelo on the scaffold.
Anyway, the recording is done. Iโll have a rest, then mix and master whatโs there before releasing it upon an unsuspecting world, which will undoubtedly stop squabbling just long enough to find shared joy in my artistic brilliance.
Alternatively, my 20 monthly listeners on Spotify will have all the fun to themselves.
