Parents, Students, and Fellow Community Members:
This morning I received a report that a former student had gained unauthorized access to the building and was in a restroom. When I investigated the situation the intruder was not in the restroom. I put the school on a precautionary lockdown (continue instruction), and began a search of the school and its perimeter. During this time I received a report that the intruder may be armed with a firearm, so I put the school on a lockdown, and told the building to follow the drill procedure related to an armed intruder. The staff and students immediately followed these procedures.
Within a matter of minutes The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Dept. responded and Deputy Angelica Miller and I began to go room to room looking for the trespasser. We were quickly joined by other officers from many different agencies. Law enforcement officers from Kanawha County Schools, Kanawha County Sheriff’s, The State Police, DNR, FBI, ATF, and Sheriff Mike Rutherford began to aid in the search and quickly set up a response command in conjunction with Dr. White, Mrs. Clay, SHS counseling staff, and front office staff.
During the room to room search, I was able to identify the intruder sitting in a classroom wearing a different outfit (disguise) from what he had been wearing earlier. The law enforcement officers took appropriate action and took the intruder into custody.
The intruder did not have a firearm on their person, but we wanted to make sure that a firearm was not hidden or passed to another student. In fact, the initial threat of the intruder was handled quickly, but the secondary search is what took longer and prolonged the process.
The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Dept. did a search of the entire building using dogs, and their efforts were followed up by The West Virginia State Police.
After giving the “all-clear,” we allowed students to get lunch and parents access to the building to sign students out.
The staff and students of Sissonville High School handled this situation just as we have been trained, and words cannot express how proud I am of our students and our teachers and staff. I know that these students have been through a lot today - especially the ones that were in the classroom and witnessed the intruder being taken into custody, but I want SHS to know I love them and their safety is always my top priority, and we will get through this together as a community and as a family.
In conclusion, I want to thank the community for their support. It did not go unnoticed that the mothers and fathers of this community were staged across the road ready to take action to protect our kids. Luckily we live in a community of hero first responders willing to put their lives on the line to protect our kids. Thank you for being patient and allowing the law enforcement officers to complete the process. Thank you for helping us keep order when the lockdown was lifted. Thank you for trusting me with your children, and know I will always do what it takes to keep OUR students safe.
With Regards,
Dr. Gene Smith
Ryan Preece takes off his sunglasses to show reporters his eyes. He said he has no vision issues. It is typical after a flip like that to have blood vessels burst.
Among the Bucs' undrafted rookies making the initial cut to 53 is cornerback Derrek Pitts -- played at West Virginia, Marshall and N.C. State, signed with Bucs for a $1,000 bonus after the draft, now makes the cut. First name is pronounced da-REEK.
This is powerful from Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla
“You always hear people give glory to God and say 'thank you' when they're holding a trophy, but you never really hear it in times like this.”
