Watch Russ cook and other thoughts ahead of the Steelers' preseason game against Buffalo
By Mark Kaboly

PITTSBURGH — Russell Wilson, who will turn 36 in a few months and has been in the league 12 seasons, tweaked his calf by engaging with, and shoving a blocking sled during the Steelers' training camp arrival-day conditioning test (no, you can’t make up something like that).
The Steelers hired a new strength and condition staff in the offseason and … well, let’s just say this wasn’t their best decision to allow a vet QB to hit a blocking sled. But at least quarterbacks aren’t going to be required to do that next season, I would assume.
It cost the veteran quarterback more than two weeks of practice and a preseason game against the Houston Texans which has created rumblings that the other quarterback they brought in during the offseason — Justin Fields — will win the starting job despite Wilson starting in the pole position, so to speak, from the day he signed.
I get it. It’s understandable to assume that.
Fields has been seen all over the internet tossing (and especially running) the football all over Chuck Noll Field at Saint Vincent College for the better part of three weeks while Wilson took a couple of snaps, a couple of reps and a couple of throws before finally ramping it up this past week to get ready to start against the Bills.
Now, Fields looked much better than he did just a few months ago during spring practices plus, you know, he’s younger and has a tangible advantage over every quarterback in the NFL —¸ his legs — and you can't dismiss that.
For Wilson, it’s been out of sight, out of mind, even though he took every first-team rep at OTAs and minicamp in May and June.
Expect that out-of-sight, out-of-mind thing to change Saturday when Wilson gets his chance to show why the Steelers were interested in him enough in free agency that they were willing to remake their entire quarterback room from a 10-7 playoff team including trading once-thought-of franchise quarterback Kenny Pickett for pennies on the dollar to the Eagles.
Wilson isn’t only what the Steelers needed but what Mike Tomlin wanted and we will see why that was against the Buffalo Bills.
This is no criticism of Fields, but you will see Wilson’s command of the offense, his decision-making abilities, his arm strength, his “weighty” down prowess, his leadership qualities and, more importantly, his ability to not turn over the ball.
It will slap you in the face when you see it.
With offensive coordinator Arthur Smith foaming at the mouth to run the ball with Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren this year, an offensive line littered with high picks and high pedigree and a tight end (Darnell Washington) who can block like a tackle combined with a $160 million defense full of stars at every level, turnovers are unacceptable. They are game-killers.
Fields has been known to give it away (41 career turnovers in 41 starts), not including two in the preseason opener last week. That is a big concern and rightfully so and even though Tomlin is a patient man in many regards, he isn’t at all when it comes to turnovers.
Wilson has everything going for him to be exactly what the Steelers need and he will give everybody a glimpse of that Saturday.
BRIEFS AND TO THE POINT
• One of the Steelers’ receivers not named George Pickens will have to emerge. Right now, it sure appears to be Van Jefferson and likely nothing will change that other than a trade for Brandon Aiyuk, which very well still could happen. But somebody else — Calvin Austin III, Scotty Miller, Quez Watkins or Dez Fitzpatrick has to show something in this game. It’s a must.
• Rookie center Zach Frazier will get the start. It might be the last time he leaves the lineup in a decade.
• People hate OT Dan Moore Jr. and I don’t get it. His stats aren’t favorable. OK, so he’s not Anthony Munoz but he’s not so bad that he’s unplayable. With rookie Troy Fautanu out with a knee injury, Broderick Jones will get flipped back to right tackle and Moore will be at his normal left tackle spot. OK, it’s not ideal but it might be what you see in Week 1 in Atlanta. I'd rather have somebody who has started 49 of his 51 games in the NFL in three years over pretty much anybody else.
• I hate the new “dynamic kickoff” rule but it’s here to stay, at least for a year. It’s going to be interesting to see how the best kickoff returner that the league has ever seen in Cordarrelle Patterson adjusts to something completely different. He was signed by the Steelers hours after the rule passed at the owner’s meetings so the the Steelers think he can figure it out. Patterson has been hurt but very well be limited to kickoff returns on Saturday. That’s OK. That’s where he’s needed the most. The Steelers haven't been good returning kicks in decades. Maybe Patterson can change that if he can adapt to these new rules.
• It’s going to be interesting to see how Elandon Roberts and Patrick Queen work together on the inside. Neither played last week because it was the first preseason game but they are expected to be on Saturday. Man, you can’t get two different styles of players who are so similar in other ways (ahem, trash-talking).
• Beanie Bishop doesn’t have much competition left at slot corner due to injuries but the UDFA rookie out of West Virginia has something to play for. If he has a bad game after what many said was a bad week of practice, the Steelers could go shopping for somebody on cutdown day. It’s happened before and will happen again.

KC fans: we’re officially not allowed to complain about anything as long as:
1) Mahomes is healthy
2) It’s November or later
3) We’re leading the AFC West
If those three things are all true then the sky isn’t falling and we have a better than even chance in the playoffs.
