The HARSH Truth About Studying Abroad
If it were in my power, I would want everyone who wants to study abroad to get a chance to do that. It is a good experience.
The exposure, the qualifications, the opportunities etc are all great.
However, there are things we don't normally talk about whenever we talk about studying abroad.
There are a lot of challenges international students face like high levels of stress, anxiety, mental health issues, burnout, loneliness etc and we hardly talk about these things.
Please know that this is based on my experience and what I have observed from many international students.
Also, I am not trying to scare you. I am just being honest. I am hoping we can be having these conversations too.
1. Financial Problems
This applies mainly to self-sponsored students.
The struggle to find tuition fees, accommodation money, food, transport and other living expenses is real and most international students face this. Some reach the verge of being withdrawn from studies because they can not fund their studies.
Solution - if possible, please get a 100% scholarship or 100% funding from your workplace, parents, siblings etc if you want to lessen this burden.
I guess that is why I share scholarships on this page. lol
2. Stress Of Working While Studying
When you decide to get a job while studying, it becomes a challenge if you have never done this before.
You are in a new country, trying to find your feet and at the same time, you have to juggle a part-time job and class work.
Many international students don't get enough time to rest. Leads to burnout, frustrations, stress etc.
I have covered the other challenges in the video in the comments sections below.
3. Social Isolation - Leading to Mental Health Issues
4. Failure To Understand Assessment Methods
5. Failure To Get A Job After Studies
Did you study abroad? What are some of the challenges you faced? Please share in the comments section below.
I am hoping to start a conversation we don't normally talk about whenever we talk about studying abroad.
